So since I grew up on late 70s and 80s arcade games, that should be an easy pick.
Selecting Bubble Bobble feels like cheating, although it might be s good entry for an ear worms episode?
So I’m picking a game that’s very dear to my me and one I keep returning to year after year: Elevator Action by Taito.
Hm. The theme of #VGMWednesday being #ChildhoodGames is a bit challenging, due to OldFartness. Not that I predate video games, but that “VGM” did not exist in much the way one thinks of at the time. Certainly there were iconic opening themes that live in my brain forever (Like Archon’s https://youtu.be/ej57b67L14Q?si=IgAxD-tNbcX2RkWD ) but so much during gameplay was just sound effects. But we shall try:
The first game that came to mind was Rock n Roll Racing on SNES. 16 bit versions of actual rock songs like George Thorogood & The Destroyers "Bad To The Bone", Black Sabbat "Paranoid", and more.
Today on #VGMWednesday it's about #ChildhoodGames
Well, here is proof that y'all are much younger than me, because in my childhood video game music wasn't a thing. 😅 Video games barely were.
But, the first PC-based video game I got for myself (on a Mac no less) was "Glider". A simple platform-like dexterity-based puzzle game with a great editor software and lovingly crafted pixel art environs. I was 18 at the time but I think it still counts. I made such a cool set of levels with it. Still a bit proud of it.
Also, just thinking about Glider makes the theme play in my head for the rest of the day.
Normally, this is where I go with a Sonic game. Not today.
Let's travel back to the early 90s when I had borrowed a copy of Bart vs the Space Mutants from a friend. That is the #TheSimpsons NES / Master System game where Bart is battling aliens that have invaded Springfield. It's...dumb, but I can't forget some of these tunes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLjxJ48UBgY
Mine has to be Burn my Dread from the #Persona 3 Soundtrack.
As a Child I really loved this song and still do to this day. It perfectly summarizes the mood of Persona 3 to me.
Legend of Kyrandia (OST, adlib and hig quality FLAC version) is one of the earlier point and click adventures that I loved playing as a kid - allthough it was quite difficult without the internet 😄
Emerald Room is very relaxing https://youtu.be/ymTioBu2_Hk?feature=shared&t=2767
Also great: Timbermist Woods, Pool of Sorrow, Caves and more
This week's #VGMWednesday is about #ChildhoodGames . #PokemonEmerald was one of the first two games I've ever played (the other being Halo Combat Evolved), and I played it a ton in my childhood.
So, I'll be going with Welcome to the World of Pokemon! from Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire. This plays when you start a new game and Prof Birch gives you the usual intro to Pokemon.
However, I associate it more with Route 123, which also uses this music. Even as a kid, it sounded nostalgic whenever I went to that route. I only found out in recent years that it plays in the intro too XD
@miona@mdmrn #VgmWednesday#ChildhoodGames wow, a lot of my childhood happened during the 8 bit PC game era, indeed the first console to become popular in South Africa were SNES knock offs and that didn't happen until the early 1990s.
Those 8 bit PC games didn't usually have much music due to only supporting single channel sound, which was left for effects.
But titie screens often had theme songs. Like this classic.
