I grew up in apartheid South Africa. My formative years were spent watching it collapse. Which made me deeply opposed to fascism and racism. It also drove me to study the system.

I am deeply familiar with how apartheid worked.

On a regular basis people try to tell me there is no apartheid system in Israel.

Invariably their explanation for why Israel isn't an apartheid state, describes a policy South Africa also had, and frequently did more humanely.

Hm. I'm also gonna add nuclear rocket launchers in my SPACE game :flan_laugh:

Cause why not! I think i saw it somewhere in Fallout and it seemed quite a fun idea.. plus it's kinda easy

metalpoetnl,
@metalpoetnl@metalhead.club avatar

@stux that was actually a real idea in the history of space exploration, thankfully never actually built.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Orion_(nuclear_propulsion)

But its saner cousins do exist. We don't use them in atmo though, firstly because radiation is bad but also they have quite low thrust so are only suitable for orbital stages

Really fantastic work to give in to COVID deniers and antivaxxers, with absolutely no long term consequences

(If you don't know, H5N1 has ~50% fatality rate.)

@pauldrye @thomasfuchs this is literally an attempt at variolation, the low-tech precursor go vaccination - which would be considered unconscionable today due to the extreme risks involved.

Worse, it's being done as self medication. At least in the early modern era it was done under medical supervision. And still lots of people died, variolation reduced overall deaths from diseases but killed lots of the people receiving the treatment. In contrast vaccination associated deaths are near zero.

What kind of high-school experience did you have? Were you in a clique? Were you popular, unpopular, the coolest kid in your Homeschool? Did you have a sweet jean jacket with patches, or maybe a leather vest? Were you an evil villain or a Mary Sue?

metalpoetnl,
@metalpoetnl@metalhead.club avatar

@RickiTarr I was the lonely, bullied nerd who kept getting into fights and hoping to fuck nobody finds out boys give me the same tingles girls do.

I didn't get my first kiss till senior year, from a new girl who didn't know anyone else yet and so didn't know it was social suicide to enjoy my company and I was a virgin till university.

I spent most of highschool in a deep depression without knowing that and with very few friends.

It took me years to get to over the trauma.

Today's theme is from @SimoRavens19

well I got a good one I think:

Two nu-metal bands gave two very different songs the same title:

And

So news this morning is that Sega USA staff has unionized. Great.

Mass layoffs in the IT sector, including gaming, in recent months have sent tech workers a clear message: "The days when you were rockstars are over. You're now as disposable as anyone else"

And it looks like IT workers are starting to respond the only way any workers can: collectively.

It's decades too late, but better late than never.

@gamingonlinux @pluralistic thoughts ?

@anti_disease I do believe both the statements in the post are true.
I just don't believe they have any relationship to each other.

metalpoetnl,
@metalpoetnl@metalhead.club avatar

@anti_disease on second thought, maybe the relationship between the events is a common cause: two people who don't understand how diseases spread

I left my steam deck at home today. I'll be reading on my commute instead because my copy of @pluralistic 's Red Team Blues has arrived.

metalpoetnl,
@metalpoetnl@metalhead.club avatar

@pluralistic it's seriously figuring stuff so far

metalpoetnl,
@metalpoetnl@metalhead.club avatar

@pluralistic and just finishing it. I thought modern day Noir had peaked with Veronica Mars.

I'm ordering the Bezzle on payday.

Maybe I'm biased by being exactly the target audience (like knowing what an unsalted hash was and getting a snigger the first time I read it) but it's just so good.

And while I'm thanking the author here: to all my followers, consider this my heartfelt recommendation. Marty Hench is the Sam Spade for the 21st century.

What an interesting topic for @Neurothings' let's get some songs about

First to mind: Dan Vasc and Violet Orlandi's excellent metal cover of Seal's kiss by a rose.

https://songwhip.com/dan-vasc/kiss-from-a-rose-metal-version

metalpoetnl,
@metalpoetnl@metalhead.club avatar

Lets follow it up with a definitely NOT metal golden oldie:

Lyn Anderson with Rose Garden:
https://songwhip.com/lynn-anderson/rose-garden

metalpoetnl,
@metalpoetnl@metalhead.club avatar

And how about we continue the rose theme with Bon Jovi's hairmetal powerbalad: Bed of Roses

metalpoetnl,
@metalpoetnl@metalhead.club avatar

Outside the roses - here's another golden oldie:
Scot MacKenzie with San Francisco (be sure to wear flowers in your hair)

metalpoetnl,
@metalpoetnl@metalhead.club avatar

And we'll finish it off with the much maligned but nevertheless talented bastard stepdaughter of Grunge.

Hole with Petals:

Time for @Kitty 's with the theme submitted by @satsuma

...there are a few songs that would fit this for me... but I'll just go with this.

And this

And what the hell some of this too

I got a nice double submission for and

Female Symphic Metal band Exit Eden just dropped a new album titled Femme Fatale

metalpoetnl, to random
@metalpoetnl@metalhead.club avatar

For @Kitty's this week I am submitting one of my all time favorite albums, and one that (sadly) is rather evergreen.

Otep's Smash the Control machine is a nakedly political album about battling rightwing oppression and authoritarianism. And it's even more relevant today than when it was released.

But it's also an album of hope - built on the fundamental assumption that we can WIN that battle. As my favorite track :"Rise, Rebel, Resist" hammers home.

For our theme is - songs whose titles aren't used in the lyrics.

Friends, ramens, Kahn tree men, I submit for your consideration: Iron Maiden with The Trooper

Or if it's a very serious matter: "For fucks' sake", i.e for the sake of more than one fuck.
