Downtown #Detroit does not have enough hotel space for this.
We really need to start putting many of the properties that are lying around to work.
It is simplistic on my part, but the single-minded destruction imposed on this city to host the 2006 Super Bowl continues to dog us.
Additionally, the Hotel Leland Building, the Penobscot Building and the Michigan Theatre Building should have been yanked from their slumlords a long time ago for hotel and residential space.
Detroit kindergarten student has died, school district warns of flu-like illness
A spokesperson for the Detroit Public Schools Community District said Wednesday that a kindergartner has passed away, and that they are temporarily closing a school for deep cleaning after an “unusually high rate” of flu-like symptoms.
The I-375 removal is a good start, but we need to simultaneously get bold with a massive transit buildout (not just increase bus service) and then ideally remove (or, less ideally, cap over) many of the other highways that are cutting off major #Detroit neighborhoods.
For example, the significant, much-needed construction/renovation projects taking place in Corktown make little sense while M-10 strangles them.
Thin-veiled #racism under the guise of "urban renewal" destroyed a once-vibrant #Black community and economic center... then-called "Black Bottom" (named by early French colonial settlers for the dark, fertile topsoil found in the area).
The City of #Detroit had published a very insightful video on the history of Black Bottom, which I would highly recommend to be watched in its entirety... but its destruction starts here: https://youtu.be/iSVgOCiT93Y?t=1044
I am relatively new to #Detroit, and it is possible that I missed it, but can someone reassure me that there is a near-term plan to dump the token-based fare system to ride the People Mover?
A near-term plan to consolidate all city/regional transportation into a single fare system?
This should have really been addressed during the recent Detroit State of the City address, if it was not done so.
I decided to start putting some galleries on my website of photos from bike rides around Detroit. Here's a blog post with four photo bike rides from early last summer
This is a really bad idea in my view and not just because I am not at all convinced “flying taxis” are actually viable, but that it continues to put more and more chips on transportation-related industry in #Detroit.
We really do need to diversify more, even noting the immense progress made on that front over the past few years.
There are no easy answers here and I understand the desire to get a “big” tenant over at the renovated Michigan Central Station area - but #Detroit needs to think bigger and bolder on supporting locally-grown #startups.
Back #Detroit citizens, communities and graduates first.
Give them the money.
Give them the Corktown space.
Lots of great ideas in this city. Tons of creativity and art and engineering.
