Lacy #phacelia aka #purple #tansy is native to NW Mexico & SW USA - it's in the borage family. I've been using them as part of #pollinators #garden & as a natural aphids #PestControl for food plants. This pretty flowering #plant attracts hoverflies & those insects love eating aphids. When it's done flowering - you can cut it down & use cuttings as #GreenManure.

No better time to build a compost heap than on the hottest day of our Indian summer. The cover crops are coming along nicely. More people are commenting on the home made compost since I started making a pile at the front of the plot three weeks ago.

Too often, and I do it too, compost is made somewhere out of sight or hidden away.

A compost heap about 1.2 metres tall and wide and 2 metres long at the front of an allotment plot. Built in layers of green material and woody material from the previous heap made three weeks ago and dried grass from the pathway. The drier outer woody material was turned into the middle of the heap. The heap was watered throughout the process. Beds of green manures and a patch of phacelia are growing well nearby.
