Been running a jpg -> conversion script on all of my photographs for 2-3 nights. 😂

I'm down from 92 gigs to 84, and I'm halfway through, I expect saving 16 gigs (~17%) in total, with zero information loss.

I hope I don't regret this :D 3 more nights to go.

Should I please Lighthouse with modern image formats, or my visitors with progressive rendering of large images in my photography site? 🤔

Of course, this would be much easier with genaralized JPEG XL support, both modern and allowing progressive… 🤷‍♂️

TIL you can reduce the size of a PNG by ~70% without any perceptible quality loss by converting to the new, royalty free format JPEG XL.

It can also do completely lossless conversion, which saves you about ~50% file size.

And it has a really cool feature to reversibly transcode existing JPEG files to JPEG XL, shaving off ~20% size.

Currently converting my image collections to that :).

Lossless conversion:

Wyszło 0.10, i bije jeszcze bardziej.

Browser maker love-in snubs next-gen image format

"... Interop 2024 omits JPEG XL, the most popular proposal as measured by community reactions (emojis added to proposal discussion threads). JPEG XL garnered 646 reactions, more than four times more than the second place finisher, which also wasn't included."

An unfortunate conclusion from a clearly biased group that is supposed to be unbiased. Unfortunate, unclear decision making from Interop this year.

/ , the most requested and upvoted focus area proposal for , has again been rejected as a discussion topic for 2024's web platform Interop industry event, because "We did not have consensus to include this proposal."

Given the industry's broad support, lack of "consensus" sounds an awful lot like "the Google Chrome team lead who authored the AVIF format arranged for it to be vetoed."

@SoniEx2 I absolutely would do that if Mozilla suddenly found their cojones and allowed to ship in stable instead of acting like a tamed old dog on a leash.

I can't recommend Safari because it is proprietary and Mac-only, and for the moment Epiphany (aka "Safari on Linux") does not meet Firefox's level of performance and reliability according to my testing & bug reporting; even on Linux, Epiphany remains a niche of a niche. There is no option for the bajillions Windows users…
