Now, operations are underway at #McMurdo station in #Antarctica for the launch of #GUSTO the 2nd. mission of the #NASA balloon campaign.
GUSTO stands for Galactic / Extragalactic ULDB Spectroscopic Terahertz Observatory (ULDB for Ultralong-Duration Balloon) is a balloon-borne 0.9-meter far infrared reflector #telescope with a cryogenically-cooled camera, to map oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon lines in the Milky Way and the Large Magellanic Cloud.

One of our wonderful science team members, Alex Michaud, took this photo of the #ice#sculptures at Lake Fryxell in the #McMurdo Dry Valleys. There's an exceptionally dry climate there, partially due to katabatic winds descending from the nearby mountains. I flew on the same aircraft (Hercules) with him to #McMurdo station in Jan 2010 where they filmed Frozen Planet and I tried to figure out how to do field work in marine biology.
His visit to the station was the talk of the continent! He gave a brilliant lecture. But the funniest memory was that the BBC team asked us to remove warning signs around our ice holes to get a pristine view of Antarctica.
