☕️ #bonjour#cafe#roman#ecriture#sf
Some of the ramparts of Ardoch Roman Fort, near the village of Braco in Perthshire. With as manay as six distinct lines of ditches and ramparts, it is amongst the most impressive fort remains to be found anywhere in the Roman Empire. Statue of Bacchus, the #Roman god of wine, on display at the Pompejanum in Aschaffenburg, an idealised replica of Roman villa, built in the 1840th by Ludwig I of Bavaria. It's modelled on the Casa dei Dioscuri in Pompeii.
About those Roman bronze openwork polyhedrons. The methods we would typically use for investigating their function are: 1) find context (structures and find combinations), 2) period imagery (if any), 3) signs of use wear. We never start by making up a way in which it is possible to use them.
For #RomanSiteSaturday a section of the #Roman Eifel #aqueduct that supplied water to the city of Cologne. The vaulted underground tunnel with an inspection shaft at Mechernich-Breitenbenden was unearthed during construction work in the late 1970s. The estimated maximum flow rate of the aqueduct was 250 liters per second. At that rate, the aqueduct would have supplied Cologne with 20 million liters of water each day!
Roman snail dye found in UK for first time. A rare dye made from snails for the robes of the #Roman elite almost 2,000 years ago has been unearthed at a cricket club in Carlisle.

Roman #Monopoly piece? A bronze figurine of #dog found at the #Roman roadside station on the Brandsteig, Aichhalden-Rötenberg, where a votive altar dedicated to Diana Abnoba was found. #Dogs were associated with Diana. The figurine may have been an offering to the goddess.
Rough Castle Roman Fort, on one of the best preserved stretches of the Antonine Wall near Falkirk. It's a great place to appreciate what the wall was like: and, just possibly, was the origin of the story of King Arthur’s Camelot. This is an attack on the reputation of the #Vandals who did no such thing and were maligned by later #Roman historians ashamed at their brief ownage.
