I just learned about (https://ruffle.rs/), a Flash emulator written in Rust that works in modern browsers!

And before anyone starts to complain about this, to this day, there's still a ton of amazing interactive content on the internet that we lost the day Apple decided to stop supporting Flash. Now we can bring it back, for old times' sake!

For instance, NYT is using it to bring back beloved graphics from the early days https://flowingdata.com/2024/01/10/nyt-flash-based-visualizations-work-again/

Know what's funny, YEARS ago I switched from to because Chrome ran Flash content and thus YouTube at the time better

I've been moving to Firefox but hadn't yet on my streaming desktop until we started playing Flash games (via ). What made me finally switch is the games ran terrible in Chrome but well in Firefox.

Found & tested a rust based emulator for content. Very nice, works well.

Classic games are back on thanks to !

As much as I like Ruffle, I really gotta say I'm disappointed it took flash shutting down for development on flash emulators to even kick into proper gear.

In a proper world, Adobe should have been made to develop an official flash emulator before ending support.

@Gianasoote The anti flash arguments were mostly BS. Security problems were true, but it was mostly adobe not bothering to treat their product right. Most flash content was pretty well vetted anyway, if it's on NG and not blammed after a few days, risk is p low.

I think most people just hated it because 1) they were told to by apple and 2) ads and media players in flash did in fact suck. But they were entirely out of style long before flash was shut down.

Gianasoote,

@SirTapTap Exactly!
people really out here acting like even the browser they use doesn't have vulnerabilities, when they do. except they get patched, unlike adobe who just gave up. all tech is inherently vulnerable and flawed, that's why maintaining them is a successful strategy.

and yeah, definitely, the flash ads sucked, really hard. but that argument they give falls apart at the seams, flash is EOL, so the ads in theory aren't an issue anymore
but in reality, they're just JSand html ads
