I just found out that one of my old interactives published at Zeit Online in 2013 is still working in the web archive! It was the culmination of my passion for timelines and data visualization, and sooo much research went into this, as we were showing data for 22 years of German governments. So happy that this is preserved, I thought it was lost forever.

Happy to share that starting in May, I'll be joining @juliustroeger and his amazing team at @zeitonline as Senior Visual Data Journalist. Very excited to getting my hands back on journalism.

Of course, my ❤️ still belongs to @datawrapper and I will continue to be part of it (I'm staying on 1d/week) in a more background/advisory role.

The map that my sons school teacher handed out to the class for learning countries and capitals in Europe was just too much for me to ignore. How often can you photocopy a map before it fades into nothing? How on earth is this supposed to help the students?? Of course, as a dad and cartonerd I had to save the day!

gka,
@gka@vis.social avatar

So I turned on , printed out a nice and empty map of Europe and sat down to label and color it by hand (due to a depressing lack of nice labeling algorithms and a color printer). Admittedly, it was tough to fit all the country names in there, but I tried my best.

🎉 New blog post! For a few months now I've been toying with an idea for a new framework for -- heavily inspired by the great Observable Plot. Very curious to hear what you think about this.

I just learned about (https://ruffle.rs/), a Flash emulator written in Rust that works in modern browsers!

And before anyone starts to complain about this, to this day, there's still a ton of amazing interactive content on the internet that we lost the day Apple decided to stop supporting Flash. Now we can bring it back, for old times' sake!

For instance, NYT is using it to bring back beloved graphics from the early days https://flowingdata.com/2024/01/10/nyt-flash-based-visualizations-work-again/

If aliens came to our planet to steal entire species of plant, animal, insect and fungi, we would mobilise against them with force. We'd rise up in their defence saying they belong here, that they're part of this world.

And yet all the while us annihilating whole species on our own is just the sad cost of progress.

gka,
@gka@vis.social avatar

@JulianOliver wouldn’t “stealing” entire species from a dying planet be more of an attempt of interplanetary preservation? I guess we’d be the lucky ones…

It's getting late, but I just finished a new monster blog post on some ways we can shoot ourselves in the foot when analyzing spatiotemporal datasets. Curious to hear what you think 🙏 !

Does anyone know of a good app for mixed-mode bike/train 🚲🚃 navigation in Germany? And by good, I mean an app where I can define a max. between-stops biking distance and which then guides me to bike to station A, take a train to station B, then get off and bike 7 minutes to station C, hop on another train to station D and then bike the last mile to the destination. Ideally taking into account how crowded the trains are. If not, can someone make this app, please? 🙏

@janeadams thanks. Definitely giving it a try!

Yay, I moved my blog from Hexo to and it just took like 2 days. Finally, I have a dark mode and can use Svelte directly in my markdown files (thanks to mdsvex)! https://www.vis4.net/blog/2023/12/from-hexo-to-sveltekit/

Now that is charging for "enhanced bitrate" streams, I'd appreciate if we all start using a different video platform for screencasts etc. I can barely read the text in the crappy free resolution

YouTube Premium ad dialog saying "Watch using enhanced bitrate with Premium"
Example screenshot of the "free" 1080p bitrate resolution with text barely readable...

@neocarto I think not adding a scalebar only makes things worse. Just don’t use Mercator for world maps.

gka,
@gka@vis.social avatar

@jhilden @neocarto agree for static maps, but not for interactive maps where you can zoom and pan around. I think in interactive maps users can understand that the scale bar only shows the correct scale at the position where it’s drawn.

Last week, I gave a workshop on using for high-performing data analysis at (a conference where scientists meet data journalists). Here's a write-up of my presentation, including an interactive DuckDB demo/ tutorial:

How about we introduce (otherwise meaningless) clauses like PLEASE or IF YOU DONT MIND to just to make the world a tiny bit better? We could call it NiceSQL and I'm taking full credit.

Some personal update from me: I'm taking a bit of a break from Datawrapper as I'm embarking on a 1-year sabbatical. That means I'll have some time for playing with exciting stuff and writing about it, like in the old days.

For my first blog post, I took a closer look at (the fantastic) @observablehq Plot: https://www.vis4.net/blog/2023/09/observable-plot-review

I’d gladly try out any other social network that is federated, open source, community-moderated, and ad-free. Until I find one, I’ll stick with . Is it perfect? No. Neither is email, but I still use it after 20 years or so. The value of open social networks is much bigger than anything a corporate-controlled network could provide.

I really wish the NYT would automatically convert F to °C for their non US audience. Can't be too hard, can it?

I wish there was an equivalent of robots.txt that would prevent my website from being used as LLM training data. I don’t want these corporate suckers to steal my blog posts and mine it for AI profits.

@astrid fast forward 10-20 years and I bet we see a giant glass dome protecting the temperature-regulated air inside the courtyard for employees.
