Ya know what I haven't done for quite some time? A live film-developing thread! The last time I did one was in August, and I developed 40 rolls in the meantime! 😁
So, let's start - first, let me gather all the stuff I need...
Ok, I've got the stuff almost ready. The film is already loaded - a custom short roll of AgfaPhoto APX 400. I'll be using Rodinal (yeah yeah, I know the bottle says Adonal), 1+50 dilution, at 22°C to speed up the process a bit and get more acutance.
News about film are usually 1) a film got discontinued, and/or 2) there's a price hike.
This time though, the news are directly the opposite - a new film got announced, and there's a price reduction announced!
I've developed the last roll of Kodak Tri-X 320 film I had. I bought a 5-roll pack, a brick, in 220 format, sometime before the plagu..err, pandemic, and it took me a few years to go through all five rolls, but I finally did it.
I'm happy with the photos I got, but I no longer have any 220 film, and I really got to like it, especially in 6×7 cameras.
I love those two-shot film developers! You know, Rodinal, diluted Xtol, diluted FX-39 and the like - just like the usual one-shot developers, but I get to use them one additional time, with or without compensation. 😅
I had 400 ml of FX-39 used to develop a roll of Fomapan 200, and I just couldn't throw away a perfectly usable 40 ml of the developer! So I developed a roll of AgfaPhoto APX400 in it. 😁
Remember that time, a month or so ago when I realized I'd just finished 100 ASA film but I shot it at 400?
I've developed that roll as suggested by @thereisnocat and it turned out just fine - except there are no photos on the film. 😅
Border markings are perfectly visible, and the leader is well exposed, but there are absolutely no traces of photos anywhere. I'll blame the camera, although it looks and sounds okay. 🤷♂️
So, I'm going out of town tomorrow for a few days, I'll be visiting friends on the seaside, and now I'm wondering how much cameras, lenses and film do I really need. 🤔 #believeInFilm#tooMuchIsNeverEnough#stayBrokeShootFilm
At the moment, the idea is to use digital cameras for colour, and film cameras for black & white. I have Agfa APX400, Ilford HP5+, KikiPan 320, Fomapan 100, Agfa APX 100 and Ferrania P30 from the first, alpha batch. The weather should be fine, faster film should give me some room for at least a yellow filter, maybe even a red one... 🤔 #believeInFIlm#stayBrokeShootFilm
Aww shit. I've just finished a roll of Agfa APX 400 in a scruffy Praktica PLC2, only to realize it's APX 100, and I've been exposing it full two stops under. 😬
I'd like to avoid standing it in Rodinal 1+100, but I'm low on options for the development… #believeInFilm#filmDevelopment#stayBrokeShootFilm
I love all of the random things that can happen when you develop film. While there are many avenues to 'screw up', I would argue that after doing this for 6 months I actually enjoy the imperfections and surprises. For digital perfection, I've got my DSLR.
But C-41 processing and then hanging negs in a closet with dust accidentally -> made a photo that looks like stars.
@skinnylatte That looks great! 🤩
But dust, ugh, I hate that stuff, I'm in the middle of an hour-long dust-banishing session on one single photo, so I might be slightly biased. 😅
Apparently, my scanner for medium format is a dust magnet. 😑 #believeinfilm#staybrokeshootfilm
