Ironic, former AZ Gov Ducey's wall that was built to keep migrants out, made of 2,000 shipping containers (cost AZ taxpayers ~$76M), is now being repurposed. A faith-based non-profit is turning the containers into tiny houses for young people transitioning out of the foster care system😃. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2023/09/11/makeshift-border-united-states-arizona-border/70827811007/

@KimPerales A small but meaningful start. Great idea to use that wall, a tangible symbol of hate and intolerance, to improve the lives of some of our society's most vulnerable youth. 🌞

@KimPerales The rent they're planning to charge is more than the mortgage on my four-bedroom house. Housing costs have gone completely insane in the US.

kkarhan,

@PalmAndNeedle That's why I only mean "Superstructure" as in load-bearing parts.

Aside from the corners one can use modern drywall & insulation materials - as is common with said container housing...

OFC a regular shipping container won't have any insulation and insulated containers would still require installing Windows into them...

but even then, Projects like work and they do kinda go into that direction...

kkarhan,

@PalmAndNeedle abeit they charge like € 500 for a 20' container, so OFC they only can do so in a precarious market where students don't have any choice if they don't want to end up homeless...

If anyone is considering a tiny home, mobile or otherwise, buy or build, and needs a reliable consultant to help think things through, allow me to recommend my friend Betsy Barbour. She’s especially deft at planning long distance moves and setting up tinies in different climates from what they were designed for. And her rates are affordable.

If you’re interested, DM me and I can connect you.
