Widespread rain and thunderstorms will spread over Australia’s eastern inland over the next few days, before drenching already sodden parts of the NSW coast this weekend.

glitch25, to Miyoo

So I might be catching the bug.

I picked up a recently, and have been having fun getting that one working too. It is really pocketable and great for some of the lower end 8 bit systems.

My was the closest I got to game consoles until I bought my Xbox 360. Never owned any of the handhelds over the years. I'm realizing how much I missed out. And the fun part now is that I can have all those AND the Commodore games I remember.

The Ambernic is the direct competition, and I chose the Miyoo in part because of the Wi-Fi and the Net Play. I will miss the HDMI, but I've also decided that this one really is for the portable small screen experience.

So far so good!

zirias,

@glitch25 it's just a side note, but IMHO, the was a game console.

I know ppl are surprised by that claim, but then look at the hardware first: The gfx chip (-II) controls the bus (CPU runs in sync with it), shares RAM with the CPU, offers versatile and efficient tiled display modes (as well as bitmapped), offers hardware interrupts, dedicates most of its silicon to , etc. The sound chip () offers a full programmable 3-channel synthesizer. There are I/O ports with both digital and analog lines suitable for lots of game controller devices. There's a clever banking logic allowing to make good use of the whole 64K RAM.

Now look at the half-assed OS. There's the (sic!) by , mostly offering I/O streams and only using some timer interrupt, more or less what a could do. On top of that, there's just Microsoft's as the only user interface. None of that can make use of any of the hardware features described above. 😏

Here's the latest variant picture for Victoria, Australia.

The EG.5.* "Eris" variant (44%) is competing with XBB.2.3.* "Acrux" (38%).

Sample volumes are a pale shadow of what they once were - now lagging, patchy and inconsistent. Under 150 samples represent a 6-week period, which likely distorts this picture.

My Retro-Computer Journey - let's start with my Ohio Scientific Challenger 4P. I got this given to me by an older fellow who was getting rid of all his stuff. It had the MOS 6502 processor in it and I kept it for several years but really didn't do much with it. I wound up donating it to a computer museum in the end. Interesting machine for sure!

deepskies,

My Retro-Computing Journey - next is my favourite computer of all time - the Commodore VIC-20. This was my first computer. I bought one off my friend in 1983 and learned how to program machine language on it. I still have one to this day (although not the same one, but the same type for sure). Great little computer. Great for BBSing, playing games (Omega Race!) and general computing.

The latest wave of COVID to hit Victoria, Australia is taking shape. Probably the most consistent stat is hospitalisations - the VIC definition is "Beds occupied by active COVID-19 cases.". These are already up 50% from the trough on August 7.

Here's the latest variant picture for Victoria.

XBB.1.16.* "Arcturus" (34%) is taking it's turn to dominate, following XBB.1.9.* "Hyperion" (24%).

XBB.1.5.* "Kraken" (13%) has been declining steadily.

The mix of very different variants poses a raised immediate re-infection risk for anyone relying on natural immunity from a recent infection.

Be alert for conjunctivitis symptoms, particularly associated with the Arcturus variant.

The sample volumes seem representative up to June 5.

The Commodore 1670 modem for the with 3 5.25" floppies with Novaterm 9.5

deepskies,

@peter Love it! I had a 1670 modem on my Commodore VIC-20 back in the 80's (it replaced my venerable VICModem1600) and I ran my BBS off of it. Great times!
