What are you guys using to manage your #Linux configuration files aka #DotFiles across multiple systems? Any good pointers where to start doing this?

@ralfhersel second this one: . takes some time to learn / stabilize a new habit, then pure joy to use and gets out of the way otherwise. @matthegap

I personally use . The declarative nature of it is so nice.

It enables me to share common configuration between different computers while still allowing host specific differences without relying on hacky solutions like .

Not knocking chezmoi, it's great and I used it for years, I just prefer the home-manager module for NixOS.

Okay so... do you check your ~/.config/nvim directory straight into source control?

Or do you keep it somewhere else and symlink the necessary files?

I'm currently doing the latter but I can decide if symlinking the lazy-lock.json is clever or madness.

tivasyk,
@tivasyk@mastodon.social avatar

@nat i used to symlink (unless i forgot to, which i did a lol, lol) then switched to , still getting used to it but overall it's definitely an improvement:

@tivasyk Oh that's very interesting. @isntitvacant are you aware of ? I seem to recall "multi-device management" being something you were interested in.

@danie10 i have a text file in a simple asciidoc format that can be exported (to html, pdf, etc.) or grep'ped (it's pointed to by $HELP), and it's on owncloud so available on most of my machines…

…but i see the beauty of and must give it a try some day: should go beautifully together with !
