I love this trend in Glasgow to having murals featuring the names of local areas. This one in Mount Florida seems to be new since the last time I visited, but there are also examples I've come across in Dennistoun, Battlefield and Govanhill.
The Maryhill Panther, painted on the exposed gable end of a traditional sandstone tenement, peeking through between newly built flats on Maryhill Road in Glasgow.
A Phoenix rising from the flames on the side of Maryhill Community Central Hall in the north of Glasgow. This mural commemorates the Phoenix Ironworks, which was established at 52 Queen Street by Thomas Edington in 1797. It later moved to Garscube Road near the Central Hall, where the specialised in making ornamental ironwork. The site of the Phoenix Foundry became the Phoenix Park in 1891.
This is one of my favourite murals in Glasgow. Created by Smug, it's painted on the exposed gable end in Govan where a neighbouring tenement building has been demolished. The gap site left behind is now used as a community garden
I love these swans. They're part of a set of murals on some hoardings blocking off an area of disused land along South Street in Glasgow, and they really help it blend in.
Dinosaur frieze on the Joseph Black Chemistry building of Glasgow University. This is one of four animal-based murals tucked away on a rear elevation of this Art Moderne Building.
Why does a chemistry building have animal murals on it? For the benefit of those in the neighbouring Zoology Department, and I suspect few people, other than those who have inhabited the Zoology Building, even know that these murals exist.
Ernie the Emu on Clyde Street in Glasgow. This is one of a pair of similar murals in the city by Australian artist John Murray. The other is at Kelvin Bridge.
The Nolly Brig over the Forth and Clyde Canal by Firhill Stadium in Glasgow, with its mural inspired by Charles Rennie MacKintosh's 1922 water colour called Sailing Ships. The bridge was built with European Regional Development Fund (from the EU) and was opened in 1990. The mural was added in 2019 by Art Pistol Projects.
Today in Glasgow is a day to be windswept and interesting, just like this mural of Jack Vettriano's 'Dr Connolly I Presume' on Dixon Street, which was created to celebrate Billy Connolly's 75th Birthday in 2017.
I love this mural by Smug on an orphaned gable end down an otherwise rather grim section of Mitchell Street in Glasgow. It brings a much needed splash of colour and interest to it.
