Love these floor tiles in the Govan Old Parish Church. Designed by R. Rowand Anderson, it was built in the 1880s.

Queen's Park Railings on the Southside of Glasgow. I'm not too sure why one is so obviously different from the others, but I suspect it may be due to the need to make a repair to a listed structure clearly discernable from the original parts.

I've always liked the look of this villa on Kirklee Road in the West End of Glasgow. It was originally built in the mid-1800s, but was heavily remodelled by J.J. Burnet around 1900.

An old clay pipe I found on one of my recent trips to the Clyde Estuary (top photo). Comparisons to one recovered from beside the Forth and Clyde Canal last year, which dates from the mid-1800s (lower photos), suggests it was made between 1720 and 1750, but I'm no expert on the subject.

Does anyone know the story behind these tiles about Alice? I run into different ones from time to time on walls around the Southside of Glasgow, mostly in the vicinity of Queen's Park.

@bodhipaksa I'll let you know if I find anything out. 👍🙂

Okay, so I've got to the bottom of these tiles thanls to this thread on Twitter:

They're the work of an artist called Oktavia Schreiner, and aim to blend stories of a fictional character (Alice) with real locations. There are at least two more tiles I haven't found yet.

I've always been intrigued by the similarities between these two buildings. On the left is a 1770s tenement on Gallowgate in Glasgow (containing the Heilan Jessie pub), while on the right is Charles Rennie MacKintosh's iconic 1902 Hill House in Helensburgh. Given that MacKintosh lived in Dennistoun until 1892, he would likely have passed the Gallowgate tenement, and I wonder if it acted as an inspiration for him.

@ianhunt There's always the possibility that the tenement was re-modelled at some point in a style similar to Hill House, but I can't find any evidence this happened. It will be interesting to see how many people agree with me on this. 👍🙂

@Millhouse It was to help dry it out so they could repair the render and the walls, which were at risk of falling apart. 🙂

Love this grotesque on Robertson and Dobbie's 1908 Glasgow Style warehouse on Wilson Street in Glasgow. It looks like a combination of the Green Man and Pan.

Ghost sign for the Royal Hospital for Sick Children on Old Dumbarton Road in Glasgow. The city's first dedicated children's hospital, it originally opened in 1882 in Garnethill. In 1914, it moved to new premises in Yorkhill in the West End of Glasgow where it remained until it was replaced by the new Royal Hospital for Children on Govan Road in 2015.

There are few things in the world as green as newly unfurled beech leaves in Spring. This was the scene I found myself immersed in at Dawsholm Park in the West of Glasgow during yesterday's morning dog walk.

A rather beautiful Scots Baronial style villa on Nithsdale Road on the Southside of Glasgow. Built around 1887, it was designed by the architect W.F. McGibbon as his own house. Amongst other buildings, McGibbon also designed the nearby Sherbrooke Mosspark Church.

The annual Yardworks Festival was on this weekend at SWG3, with its usual display of wonderful street art. This one, by I Am Sprite, was one of my favourites.

There are few things which beats a wally close for making a great first impression. This one is in the Hyndland area of Glasgow. For those who don't know, a wally close is the communal entrance to a tenement which is lined with tiles, and often beautifully crafted ones.

thisismyglasgow,

@avirr We had our share of tenements like thst too, but there werr also some extremely upmarket ones, too. Incidently, the tenements of places like New York were probably inspired by the tenements of places like Glasgow - and quite a few even used the same sources of Scottish sandstone. 🙂
