We've been busy helping out at @leigh_hackspace. It's nice to report progress. We've spent time building up the fabrication and electronics areas.
Fabrication now has three FDM 3D printers up and running, a laser engraver and a vinyl cutter. (CNC is in the woodshop). It'll have a dedicated CAD workstation this week with slicer and control software for all the machines, all machines will/are network accessible and are soon to be documented on the wiki. Training to be offered soon.
Electronics has new shelving and paint. We have solder stations, hot air rework stations, oscilloscopes, power supplies, and plenty of stock to work on projects. It looks a bit of a mess, but it's about to have a big sort and will be ready for use very soon.
If you're remotely in the area, we have an open day on the 29th of July. If that doesn't suit, we can do tours on Saturdays or get in contact.
My friends and I, who are co-directors of a fledgling makerspace/hackspace CIC in Wales, have started crowdfunding to raise enough money to move into full-time premises: https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/machspace
We're all on low incomes and our town council is broke, and our community sorely needs free and cheap ways to socialise comfortably indoors, and to make and repair things to save cash.
We're willing to put in the elbow grease to make it happen - can you chuck in a few quid?
Hello! I have a question for people running smallish makerspaces in the UK - like, a big room with several tables in?
How much (approx, ballpark) do you spend on consumables per month? (Refreshments, 3D printer filament, woodworking bits, any other supplies.)
Also how many members do you have?
I'm asking because we're applying for a grant to cover running costs and we're being asked for an estimate of what we expect to spend, but we don't yet have premises. We'd be allowing members to use e.g. filament, tea bags, etc. for free, if we get the grant. So I do need to know how much it costs in the first place, even though you probably usually do get it covered by people buying/donating for what they use in most hackspaces!
I have a load of spare bare PCBs. Most work, and most have date codes so the exact schematic can be found on my github if you try. It seems a shame to chuck them out. Is there anywhere that would be a good home? Maybe a #hackspace that just wants to practice soldering, or actually use some of the boards. A good example is those purple ones - very few components needed to make a USB powered #ESP32 board. Just that actually ordering more boards was/is sometimes cheaper than fewer! #PCB
