Having not done a real hike since November, it seemed the perfect time to launch myself on ~40 miles over 3 days backpacking.
Day 1 started in old growth redwoods, passed remains of homesteading, then climbed past a selection of trees to one of the old growth redwood backpacking camps.
Day 2 wasn't far, but had excursions to make it longer than the first. Out along Hanson Ridge and up to the fire lookout on Grasshopper Mountain and one that shall simply be known simply as The Excursion.
I stopped by an old corral to make a trailless hike to the highest point of the Fat South Egans Wilderness. It is a rugged place, but folks have discovered a route that is very straightforward right to the top.
Looking southwest from Wheeler Peak as sunlight filters through the clouds of an incoming storm. Sangre de Cristo Mountains, New Mexico, September 2018.
This is the highest peak in New Mexico, and as a "metric person" it was quite a treat because it was the first peak over 4000 meters for me. :)
Saw an open permit for High Sierra trail and grabbed it. Submitted a random 4 day itinerary out of Crescent meadow but don’t really have a plan so not intending to follow it. No ride on the far end so I won’t point to point to Whitney.
Might hobo around Hamilton lake, maybe go off trail from Kaweah gap, maybe try some summits around 9 lakes basin, maybe just stay on trail to Kern hot springs.
The area is very familiar so I’m comfortable packing a bag and going random. Will be nice to be back with the giant sequoias 💚
Got up by 9 AM found company to climb with on the way. Good conversation and a human to put into pictures for scale. Got the summit for ourselves one group exiting as we were approaching. #PeakBagging#Hiking#Backpacking#Mountains#Landscape
