For #MountainMonday:

Low clouds hang over the southern slopes of the Laguna Mountains as monsoonal moisture makes its way through the Southern California desert in September 2016. The solitary tree is a Pinyon Pine.

A friend from Germany sent me a message with a photo today: "Your card with New Year's greetings has arrived!" โ€” I thought that was rather late... but upon closer inspection, it turns out that it was even later! ๐Ÿคช

The 2025 Aston Martin Vantage gets a bold new body and big power boost

It features modern tech, a better interior, and an extra 150 hp on the old model.

@arstechnica I dream of a world in which reporting on gas-guzzling, climate killing dick enlargements for a few rich people has ceased.

Testing this phone camera again. Out for a walk at Virginia Lake Park in Reno. Last phone camera shot I took looked awful. Way over-processed. On this one I turned off the faux-AI BS. It's a Motorola Moto. Also, I can barely see the screen. (Update: Now that I'm home and can view this on my computer, it's much nicer than the one I took the other day with that AI garbage turned on. This is an acceptable photo. Maybe I'll use it for some social media posts on upcoming hikes I'll be doing.)

alexskunz,

@elaterite interesting โ€” some strange artifacts are visible, almost like too much of Topaz Sharpen AI / Photo AI... which I know you're not using (I think).

alexskunz,
@alexskunz@mas.to avatar

@elaterite the twigs in the top right corner in particular. It seems like they were out of focus (camera focused at infinity) and an AI "intervened" and tried to bring them into focus. It's a very recognizable artifact.

alexskunz,
@alexskunz@mas.to avatar

@CStamp even if it's motion, it shouldn't look like this... it's very clearly an artifact introduced by "AI" smarts (gone wrong) @elaterite

alexskunz,
@alexskunz@mas.to avatar

@elaterite it wouldn't surprise me if there was no way to turn it off. My iPhone turns all skies into an "extreme polarizer to the max" blue and there's no way to turn it off either.

Bird Flu Outbreak

"H5N1 now confirmed in 11 US farms. Cats die within 48 hours."

https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2024/4/6/2233826/--H5N1-now-confirmed-in-11-US-farms-Cats-die-within-48-hours

"Vets are being advised to wear full PPE (personal protection) if seeing a cat with neurological symptoms, after forty cats died on a dairy farm in New Mexico. The virus has proved 100% fatal and cats die within 24-48 hours.

Is it safe to consume dairy products? The answer for RAW products is NO. The virus has been detected in unpasteurised milk."

@SteveThompson why are there 40 cats on a dairy farm

alexskunz,
@alexskunz@mas.to avatar

@SteveThompson or Daily Kos "community" posts are unverified garbage...

alexskunz,
@alexskunz@mas.to avatar

@inquiline that's why I was compelled to think that Daily Kos is garbage (as it very often is) but oh miracle of miracles, those passages have mysteriously disappeared from the Daily Kos article now. ๐Ÿ˜œ@SteveThompson

A THREAD ON THREADS!

Iโ€™m receiving lots of questions about our position on federation with Threads and realised I havenโ€™t posted on this subject for a while.

We have lots of users who do want to federate with Threads, and lots of users who donโ€™t. Itโ€™s my job to find a good solution that works for everyone.

Our position has always been to start from a defensive stance due to our technical and moderation concerns.

So what sort of solution do we think might keep (almost) everyone happy?

alexskunz,
@alexskunz@mas.to avatar

@trumpet I didn't mind Threads being blocked on the server level and will block it as soon as it becomes necessary.

For #MountainMonday here is colorful Mount Perry, a peak in the northern Black Mountains of Death Valley National Park.

The hike to Mount Perry's summit starts at Dante's View and is pretty much "uphill both ways", with a distance of 8.5 miles. From Dante's View one first loses about 800 feet in elevation โ€” and then has to gain it back. And the same on the way back out of course. ๐Ÿคช
