The #JohnOliver show on #PigButchering is on YouTube now. Think you’re too smart to get caught up by one? So did this bank CEO, who lost his bank, literally. Do your research and watch this show to protect yourself and your money, or maybe a friend’s. https://youtu.be/pLPpl2ISKTg?si=HwzCGYrZgZ7z1m74
This is a next level scam. Share this w/ all your non-technical & technical relatives.
❌ Seemingly coincidental encounters originating from random text messages
❌ Pre-created dossiers of you to make the scammer seem familiar
❌ Long game trust development
❌ Fake investment sites w/ App Store-registered mobile apps
THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULD NEVER ACCEPT LINKEDIN REQUESTS FROM STRANGERS.
What with the rash of spam accounts lately, and all the occasional scam accounts that can show up in a DM, I recommend that everyone look on YouTube for John Oliver’s latest show tonight. He focuses on the #pigbutchering scam that is rampant now. I just looked and the show is not up yet. Think you’re too smart to get caught? Think again. One of the victims John highlights was CEO of a bank who literally lost his bank to the scam. Here’s a link to the wiki about the scam: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pig_butchering_scam
@Tutanota Snowden was right. NSA is less harmful than LinkedIn, which might track and share information with scammers. There are a lot of #pigbutchering scammers on LinkedIn.
Ok, so my #pigbutchering#defimining case investigation wrap-up is coming Monday am. I have an overarching report I'm doing for early January that will tie together all of the bits we've done over the last 18 months or so of tracking sha zhu pan techniques, tools and practices, what we know about the operators and the scope of their activities, etc. And I'll be presenting on this at #Shmoocon (the 13th or 14th, not nailed down yet).
A new crop of 🐷🔪 liquidity mining scam sites coming in, and it looks like this group of scams favors routing victims to Bybit to purchase Tether to take from them. 145 new domains identified, and I'm trying to total up the damage but it looks like in just the last month they've cleared 1.4 million based on random samplings of cashout wallets and statistical projection.
A short update on #pigbutchering#shazhupan#cryptoscammers#cryptoscamhongkong : I have seen increased use of T-Mobile and Telefonica prepaid wireless numbers used for WhatsApp accounts operated by scammers. A victim in Poland was contacted by a person claiming to be from China but in Germany, using a Hong Kong carrier number. They switched to a German Telefonica number, and "VIP Support" operated a US T-Mobile numbered account.
While I stopped being a young adult around the time I purchased glasses in order to be able to see small things up close, I am the perfect audience member for @pluralistic's brilliant "Little Brother".
Half "Nineteen Eight-Four", half introduction to privacy and cryptography, half hacker manifesto, half teen romance, half historical account, one quarter nostalgia hit and five quarters thrilling adventure well read by Kirby Heyborne.
I'm glad that the dystopian world depicted by @pluralistic's "For the Win", in which vulnerable folk are coerced into committing cybercrime while suffering inhumane conditions in economically disadvantaged parts of our world, is fictional.
🧐 Workers are trafficked into scam compounds, where they carry out “pig butchering” operations, in which a cybercriminal forges a relationship with a targeted person from afar before stealing from them.
