In case you missed it, @khinsen has put the Python version of the ActivePapers project in mothballs: "While is has achieved its mission of demonstrating that unifying computational reproducibility and provenance tracking is doable and useful, it has also demonstrated that Python is not a suitable platform to build on for reproducible research. #LazyWeb: I'm trying to find a white paper? from 1-2 years ago that was arguing for a third classification in Australian universities - to add a specific research software engineering category, because professional/general and academic pathways don't account for specialist software engineering skills.

I'd like to tell you about what it's like being a research software engineer (#RSE) but that might not make sense if I don't first explain what we mean by "research software".
While studying everything from ancient manuscripts and historical market sentiments to novel battery technologies and how the Universe formed, researchers use niche software and technologies. What's more, they often write their own programs & scripts to genereate or analyse data. This, in essence, is research software.
