#GreatAlbums1980s - #TheJesusAndMaryChain – Psychocandy (1985). The violence at gigs that got the JAMC branded "the new Sex Pistols" was much at odds with the music the Scottish group made once sequestered in the studio.
While William Reid's glaze of feedback on songs like "Never Understand" and "You Trip Me Up" implied chaos lurking nearby, Psychocandy recalled the tightly crafted 60s pop of the Beach Boys and Phil Spector. Ultimately, melody not mayhem made it a classic.
After ploughing through fucking HOURS of music released this month, I can again say that music has never been healthier in my lifetime, whatever genre.
The mainstream fraction of that rainbow is, however, at its most drab, insipid and lukewarm pissy since the '70s.
This is what happens when major labels control EVERYTHING. They even engineer "viral" hits on TikTok.
BLAND ON BLAND.
BABY WINEHOUSES, ANTARCTIC MONKEHS, NED ALSORANS and ETERNAL MONEY HOUSE.
But if '80s #shoegaze was basically #SunshinePop completely obliterated by walls of distortion and feedback, then you could even include some of the indiepop bands. If they're singing sad songs, of course.
