Welcome to , the Fediverse's discussion hashtag. Our topic this week is "early work." Two questions left.

Question 4: "How long did it take after starting that you felt you were doing 'a good job' regarding your webcomic?"

Please include the hashtag so we can track responses and bring in other creators. You can answer the question whenever you see it on your timeline, even weeks later.

Q4. I'd say my art got competent starting around 2011 when I rebooted my first original series The Sorcerer's Apprentice, but I wouldn't call my art 'good' until 2020. That's when I thought my work looked professional in my eyes, like if I posted it along side some of my idols, it wouldn't stand out.

Q3. Hooboy, what wasn't a challenge? I knew nothing about making comics or posting things online. I didn't know how to scan or use photoshop or any HTML so my first version of my webcomic in 2001 didn't even work because all the images were broken. I had to learn EVERYTHING from scratch and there were no books back then on how to do it

ProphetEKA,
@ProphetEKA@mastodon.social avatar

@webcomictalk Q3: Posting it. I know it should be something like "Doing the artwork" or "Coming up with the idea" but folks... I was working before comics-related CMS stuff was a well known thing you could just get. If I kept going, I'd have had to hand code a fresh page w/ every update. That didn't help the project last longer than it did. -.-

I have a webcomic (toddlersuperhero.net) that has been parked for a bit but very much alive and it was an idea I turned into a webcomic from a hand-drawn character in one of my sketch books.

@webcomictalk my first couple webcomics were strips and unfinished stories I made on impulse without even really thinking of them as webcomics. Then I made Manifest your spectre, which was made as a short simple story to serve as a sacrificial first webcomic goat, but grew to be one of my darlings.

Q2. My first webcomic was a fan comic because I was too mad that Cardcaptors ended, and rather than write a story I decided drawing it would be better because no one else was really doing stuff like that

@webcomictalk Q2: "Proph's Place" was very much a thing where I wanted to do comics & knew I needed to actually Do the Thing to get good at the Thing. The whole posting it online part was a way to motivate me to do/continue to do it.

ProphetEKA,

@webcomictalk Q1: A single page was made of it but it was called "Prophet's Place". Simply put, I owned a comic & hobby shop in the mall I ratted back when that was a thing you could do as a teenager (Late 90's/Early 00's). The cast was a bunch of Furries aside from myself & an obligatory robot. = )

Q1. My first webcomic project was a 3 season Cardcaptors/Cardcaptor Sakura fan comic called Cardcaptor Torika that I did throughout high school and part of college. It ran from 2003-2007 though there was a version from 2001 that never made it online

@webcomictalk This was one of those days I didn’t draw much, but I drafted a WIP post today for the upcoming episode. It’ll feature some of the panels I’ve been working on and it should be ready to publish on my project site during the weekend.

@webcomictalk Yesterday I worked on vectoring a couple of panels for ep. 41 of Magical Renegades Anathema to Commonsense and drafted more notes about the production process for this episode.

I often write my WIP notes & post-episode production notes as I work on the episode.

One of the panels was new and another was a revamp from the previous comic version.

Q4: Create an onomatopoeia for one of the following...A laser blast...

We recently had to ask ourselves this for handling the laser shots in Badland Convicts! We settled on a sort of "zzzhhp!" -- the zzhhh being the laser cutting through the air at light speed & the p! being it making contact with its target. It couldn't be a really hard contact sound as it's the force of light & heat hitting rather than a solid projectile.

@webcomictalk

Q3: What is your favorite onomatopoeia you have seen in a comic?

I just started reading Tiger, Tiger (http://www.tigertigercomic.com) & already it's got some wonderful conveyance of sound & silence for comedic effect.

But I really thought this one was creative because I've never considered what it would sound like to carve into a sea sponge with a knife but gosh can I hear this from the onomatopoeia chosen!

krakencomics, to random
@krakencomics@socel.net avatar

@webcomictalk

Q2: How do you determine what a sound effect looks like/onomatopoeia...

We do use a bit of onomatopoeia as in the shotgun pump here (all consonants, no vowels to make the hard clack of the metal.) We also bring out the "shape" of the sound, like the path the sound travels through the air, as with the rough vehicle engine sounds. We also get to see here Brad is a bit more accustomed to loud sounds than Johnny is from the difference in their expressions.

(Answering some Qs from last week)
@webcomictalk

Q1: "Do you include sound effects in your comic? Why or why not?"

Badland Convicts is laden with sound effects. Toybox is intentionally silent, so we don't really have any sound effects in it because the idea is to have the images themselves make you "hear" it; no dialogue OR sound effects.

This is one of my favorite panels we've ever done for Badland Convicts. A simple word & lettering combo, but it feels classic cartoon to me.

batichi,

@webcomictalk a few ways, firstly I try to make the noise I want to hear, sometime look up sound effect folks and follow how their mouth moves to associate letters, then I try to incorporate the word in the illustration itself.
