There was a lot of swearing at the American Dialect Society's word of the year vote on Friday, thanks in large part to Cory Doctorow @pluralistic and "enshittification." My summary for the @stronglang blog: https://stronglang.wordpress.com/2024/01/07/the-sweary-wotys/

"Enshittification", "FAFO", and "assholocene" featured in the American Dialect Society’s recent word-of-the-year vote.

assholocene:

'The earliest citation I’ve found is from a June 25, 2023, Urban Dictionary entry: “the current period of human history in which people in power tend to be assholes.”'

I found a 17th February 2014:

“Paleontologists of SFWA will one day refer to this as the Assholocene Era … ”

I missed this one: It looks like "(derogatory) post-inserted adjectival aside" won Informal Word of the Year.

I think it was a last-minute addition because it's not on the published nominees list, and I know they sometimes add nominees at the event.

Gretchen McCulloch has a photo of the list that was projected in the voting room:

@jesszafarris and I just recorded a word-of-the-year episode for the Grammar Girl podcast. It won't come out until 12/28, so I hope you're all finished with your cool announcements!

"AI" continues to dominate word-of-the-year choices.

Dictionary.com just chose "hallucinate," and The Economist recently chose "ChatGPT."
