They’re self aware. Understand the difference between subjectivity and objectivity. When they encounter someone different, they don’t judge, see it as a learning opportunity. Put thought into their words. If you ask them a question, you can see them carefully thinking about it.

Not specific to your situation, just a process I recently went through. White female, thick, wavy, unruly hair. For decades, most haircut, style places were white people focused. Most white women have fine, straight hair. These places just didn’t know what to do with me.

Few months back, did research. 2a to 2c hair. Reading stuff online, many people with same hair were black women, sharing tips. So I went to a salon, all black staff and customers. Said, I’m having trouble figuring out what to do with my hair, anyone feel OK educating me?

Nice older black woman said with a smile, come over here white girl, let’s see what we can do. Glad I took a risk. Best haircut, style, ever. She turned me on to a lot of good hair products.

Meds affect people differently. I tend to have paradoxical reactions to meds. Have learned to trust my instincts. I mention cuz it’s good you’re asking questions, educating yourself. Just keep in mind, figuring out what works for you may not match up with other people’s experiences.

I’m the same way, most song lyricsare incomprehensible gibberish. So you’ll probably recognize this catchy line: “wrapped up like a douche in the middle of the night”

31415926535,

Have an external hard drive filled with tv shows, been collecting for years. Most via torrents.

31415926535,

No offense taken. Any bad joke is a good joke to someone else. =)

31415926535,

Awesome show. Yeah, I’m a bit iffy about how it ended, but it could’ve been so much worse.

31415926535,

Yes. Some books I remember so fondly, reread from time to time. If I lose such a book, I’ll replace it. Some of these books:

Flatland

The phantom tollbooth

Wrinkle in Time trilogy

There’s a cat in my apt complex. Many cats, but this one often looks unhappy, disheveled. Terrible owner. Whenever we pass each other, he gives a plaintive meow. Every so often, he tentatively accepts skritches behind his ear.

So, out for walks, random places, whenever I see this cat, I meow. And he meows back. I meow again, he meows back. Never had a cat do this. It’s like he’s talking to me, we’re having a conversation, I just don’t know what he’s saying. Wish I did.

Yesterday, browsing wikipedia, stumbled on articles that talked about this very thing, on how Russia took advantage of mental health systems. They started to classify nonconforming, rebels as mentally ill. A frequently used diagnosis was sluggish schizophrenia. Anyone who was socially awkward, thought differently got this diagnosis. Cuz if someone is questioning our government, they must be sick in the head

They used this heavily for decades to discredit political rivals, forcible confinement, lock them away, work camps. Think gulag archipelago.

KFC in Brooklyn. Empty restaurant, staff noisy, raucous in back. Ordered chicken, looked kinda pink, tasted weird, but ignored instincts, kept eating, cuz hungry.

Next week I spent in apt puking guts up, sweats, feverish, feeling like death, huddled in a ball, head pressed against wall.

31415926535,

Past week, been seeing a lot of anti liberal stuff on lemmy. So, you’ve got people from the outside trying to destabilize the u.s. saying, both sides are the same, democrats are just as bad as Republicans. This creates a scenario that created Trump becoming president in the 1st place. It’s done on purpose.

Now, I understand that democrats, liberals aren’t perfect. But we have one side trying to set up detention camps, threatening to kill political rivals, consumed with hate. Other side trying at least to be better people.

I’m asking honestly, I would like to learn. Why is the both sides mindset becoming so prevalent?

31415926535,

I tend to hyperfixate. So I got into habit of getting up every 3 hours, going outside, walk around block. I will say to self, get up, right now, out of this chair, outside, now. Been doing this so long now, it’s become habit, part of daily routine. Has helped a lot.

31415926535,

Used to. Constantly wanting their approval, ways to impress them, make them like me. Constantly trying, making an effort to connect, join.

Then realized was focusing on my needs. Often, people so wrapped up in their own drama, realized I wasn’t the center of the universe. So I stopped trying.

Once I did that, weird thing happened. People started to come to me, wanting to chat, hang out.

Of course, this was in a psych ward, and I’m 43, no friends, living in a crappy studio apt, and only people I talk to are myself and random strangers on the internet. So what do I know.

31415926535, (edited )

Yep. Most people in psych wards are struggling, need to process, deal. A typical dynamic I’d find: in the common room during free time, a few would be hanging out, socializing. Some sitting in corner would look over, and you could see they wanted to join, but were scared to. So one of us would say, hey if you want to sit with us, feel free. Some would accept, take chair next to us, and they’d sit quietly, and we’d leave them be, not pressure. Some would thaw, start engaging more. And some would leave, go sit in a corner.

Sometimes, I’d be that person, and be grateful for them reaching out, offering to include me.

This can translate to outer world. Just, normal world, can be hard to connect, people are less honest, less weird. I do better with weird. =)

31415926535,

Heck yes. Lot of creative people with fascinating stories.

31415926535,

Asperger syndrome and long term relationships. Woman author, last name Wiley, I think. She talks about her relationship with asperger partner.

The ethical slut. Odd, but it helped a lot, taught me how to communicate with people.

How to win friends and influence people. A bit cheap, scammy like. But has few good parts.

Go online, research the different ways autism peeps and neurotypicals communicate. Really fascinating. When autism people think of communicating, it’s the sharing of thoughts, ideas. Neurotypicals, it’s about elaborate rituals, almost a dance, they need it to know they’re included, have been accepted into the social group.

Fascinating from an anthropology perspective.

31415926535,

I have no idea what this is about, but seeing this in my feed made me bust out laughing. I love how random and weird lemmy can be at times.

31415926535,

Economy of movement. I get up from chair, walk to kitchen. Always done as efficiently as possible, start to rise from chair, deftly pick up cup, smooth seamless turn, as I walk into kitchen I efficiently tilt, dance thru doorframe, step of feet perfectly timed to match curved motion of body, arm as it reaches for kitchen sink. Everything must be done as efficiently as possible.

31415926535,

My mother was a legal secretary, so she taught me shorthand when I was a kid. W/o was included in those teachings.

That butterflies technically can’t fly. But that they do proves there’s a god, creating miracles.

Modern aeronautics can explain exactly how a butterfly can float in the sir.

Oh, the one random person from my childhood who said that black men looked like gorillas, which means they’re stupid and violent. Mexican men looked like coyotes, which meant they’re sneaky and conniving. And white men probably had a similar flaw, but since she was white, she didn’t know what it was.

31415926535,

First job was at a fast food place. One day, a car at the drive thru was hurling abuse, threats at the cashier. Manager of the restaurant made sure their order was ready as quickly as possible. Then, as a bunch of us watched, she opened each burger and spit on each one, smeared it into the bread so it wouldn’t be noticed, rewrapped, and then handed them to the customer personally.

That’s when I learned to ALWAYS be polite to the people who prepare and serve your food. And to always open up a burger or sandwich b4 I bite into it.
