Accused Fraudsters Bankrolled Star-Studded MAGA Bash (www.thedailybeast.com)

When Trump-loving youth group Turning Point USA hosted a four-day extravaganza last month featuring right-wing media’s leading lights, it did so with cash from two groups the feds say bilked millions from elderly Republicans and anti-communist émigrés from China.

I’m convinced this sort of thing is where all their money comes from. They’ve just realized in recent times that there’s little point in covering it up.

While I agree with the statement, it’s funny how different I would paint it.

High quality pancakes can be transcendent. Decent French toast is always good. Finally waffles are like pizza (the right toppings can make up for anything). It’s hard to entirely fuck them up, so, even crappy waffles are ok with enough butter and maple syrup.

4grams,
@4grams@awful.systems avatar

True, given a choice of the three, I’ll take French toast most any time. I like them all though, pancakes have to be good ones, crappy ones are inedible. Waffles are good but unless it’s something fresh or that I put effort into at home, they are essentially eggos.

I’m m sure the “millions lost” is their theoretical earnings they are “losing” by not being able to monetize the data they collect, spy on users to determine their habits so that they can introduce features that charge for things that are standard today, loss of ad revenue, etc.

We’ve hit a point where since everything collects as much data as they can to be mined, anything that interrupts that stream is now a felony corruption of business model.

Another question about used hard drives

Did decide to go the used drive route just saving up and waiting for the right deal from a good seller. I did notice on eBay specifically that some sellers have tested drives for a great price per tb with a shit seller’s warranty (30 days to 1 year) but offer insurance for a significantly longer length of time for a few more...

4grams,
@4grams@awful.systems avatar

Bingo. I’ve been running refurb 4tb hgst drives for years now, oldest one has 50k power on hours and I’m not sure if that’s how long I’ve run it or if it had a bunch when it came. Either way, I have yet to lose one in years of use while popping several western digital and seagate drives.

I’m moving to 10tb drives (I tend to pick the biggest sub $100 drive option when I need a new standard) since I’m out of drive bays and nearly out of space on the old garbage array. Stick to the 3-2-1 rule and these should be fine.

between lemmy, mastodon and my own nerd projects, I’m having more fun on the internet than I have since the 90’s. so, while I hate the enshittification, the side effect has been me rediscovering what was so fun in these tubes…

Trump Isn’t Bluffing. We’ve become inured to his rhetoric, but his message has grown darker (www.theatlantic.com)

“We pledge to you that we will root out the Communists, Marxists, fascists, and the radical-left thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country, that lie and steal and cheat on elections,” Donald Trump said this past November, in a campaign speech that was ostensibly honoring Veterans Day. “The real threat...

Why sober, thoughtful conversation like this is not happening is beyond insane to me. Like I just do not know how to deal with a reality that treats this as normal.

Well said, I agree with every word.

damn, I really like this, thank you for introducing me to him.

Yo, what was your first computer? How old were you, where and how did you get it, what did you do with it, etc.

TL;DR It was an old Wang system, 286 processor(I think, anyway), with no hard drive, a 5.25" floppy drive, and a lovely green monochrome monitor. I didn’t have it long enough to reach the point where I could have identified the actual hardware/specs....

Apple 2e I got from my next door neighbor at a garage sale. I spent every moment on the thing until I saved up enough to build myself a 486. After that I was the computer kid so people would give me their old stuff, had a 286 and a 386 that put together from a box of discarded office computer parts. Spent hours sorting through and testing individual RAM chips but was able get it working, I still remember typing up school papers on it and the horrible racket the daisy wheel printer made as it printed my assignments on green and white office paper.

Since it was pretty much marketed as a Non-Fallout, Fallout game, I gave it a shot. I tempered my expectations though because let’s be honest, most of the time copycats fall flat. So, I was actually pretty impressed with the game and ultimately found myself wanting more. It certainly felt like a freshman attempt but a really damn good freshman who’s hopefully going places. The humor was good, if not a bit forced at times, the relationship system was fun although it being kinda 3rd party made the stakes a little lower, I enjoyed the gameplay and the story for the most part and IMHO it certainly looked good enough.

All in all, I’m a little excited for this now.

4grams,
@4grams@awful.systems avatar

Yeah, that’s kinda what I mean about being a copycat. Did feel rushed, and there was a lot borrowed; felt like fallout at times, bioshock others, even reminded me of some LucalArts SCUMM/GrimE games. But overall I think they accomplished what they set out to and managed to make a decent game. Hopefully this news means they are stepping up their game (literally).

It’s why I went back to PC gaming. As an aging man with children, I am no longer interested in having a bleeding edge gaming machine so I went to consoles for a while. It was too painful keeping a subscription on something I don’t often play so I didn’t bother with a PS5 and got a steamdeck instead.

For me anyway, the modern web feels like the realization of those early internet pioneering ideas. I run my own personal site, with a nice open source google photos replacement, hosting my own VDI, streaming services, you name it. It’s all running on a pile of discarded speak and spell’s in my basement (a joke but only barely, this junk will run on anything that can host a container). It’s all possible thanks to the open source shoulders of giants I’m standing on and in spite of my lack of coding experience (I’m dev/ops). The fact that I run more infrastructure than my first few jobs combined, as one hobbyist, kinda blows my formerly teenage brain.

It’s still out there, just so long as you are willing to DIY. I am holding great hope for the fediverse, although I’ve been getting used to disappointment lately.

No worries bud, I get the feeling and it’s completely understandable when looking at the current landscape. It’s been an amazingly shitty run of luck for me lately so I’m clinging to hope.

This is why I like shower thoughts, makes for great conversation :)

I’m not interested in traffic. I’m literally a bored old dude who plays with junk. The only purpose for the site is me to play but I post for fun in case anyone stumbles across it. I’m delisted from everything.

Back in the 1990’s as a teenager I loved my little part of the webrings of personal, pointless sites full of random crap. I’d check in on friends on their personal sites and geocities pages that overused the blink tag and animated gifs. That’s the classic internet that I’m talking about, and I fully embrace it on my little pile of shit. But point taken so link removed just to be safe.

There’s a few out there that are pretty decent. I actually use two at the moment but will consolidate eventually.

Been using Librephotos for a while now: docs.librephotos.com - tried a few but landed on this one not for any real technical reasons, I just like the interface and it’s easy manage.

I also use immich.app - I started using it as a simple way to backup my families phone photos but it’s on such a furious development pace that I’m pretty sure it’s going to replace librephotos for me as well someday.

I threw some filtering on it just to be extra safe and wound up blocking everything but the US. Did get a small uptick on bot traffic when I posted a link so might have overdone the security a little.

Guessing you are from one of the countries in hat showed up in the filter logs. I’ll do some selective unblocking.

EDIT- been selectively unblocking as I see them. I’m extra paranoid but also always learning.
