i made mastodon for the nintendo 3ds :3c

a video of a new nintendo 3ds. i open the miiverse app and the mastodon explore timeline appears. i then demonstrate the following things: - switching timelines with zl/zr - viewing a user profile - viewing images - viewing alt text

technical details cuz u guys are all nerds :3

i kinda lied its not really an "app" because it isnt doing the rendering on the 3ds.

its actually a web app. the miiverse app on the 3ds is actually just an applet that embeds a web page.
if uve ever heard of those "miiverse replacement" services like pretendo or rverse what theyre doing is basically just patching the urls the client goes to with their own servers . this is what im doing.

i wrote a server in python that does ssr page rendering, proxying for images and has some routes for favoriting/boosting/etc that the client uses xmlhttprequest with.

writing a website compatible with this things ancient web browser was fun. and i didnt even need to do that many css crimes!! its funny bc in making this i accidentally made a really simple mastodon web app that can run on like. chrome version 3

its so neat when queer kids are in love online. our relative lack of parental protection and real-life support networks leaves us incredibly vulnerable to abuse and there are very few spaces, queer or otherwise, that are explicitly friendly to us but despite it all sometimes we send each other hugs bookended by asterisks

in ~2009 ppl were hacking the iPod nano (3rd/4th generation) and the circumstances of the bug that was found meant they had to bruteforce for a jump address to get code execution. the bruteforcing process involved pressing buttons to get it to reboot so they built fucking ROBOTS out of lego and motors and servos and stuff to automate the process and its literally the coolest thing EVER!!!

some sort of evil lego contraption with a nano 4g trapped inside of it
i cant even tell what this is but it looks like a servo connected to some sort of pulley mechanism that presses buttons on an ipod nano 3g laying on a table

message to all reverse engineers and hackers of fedi: when youre figuring out some really obscure thing and you finally crack it PLEASE document it somewhere on the web. maybe youre the first to ever walk this path, maybe youre the first person to care. but i promise you are not the last, and there will be a day when some lone hacker follows the path you took years or decades ago and they will find what you wrote and they will be eternally grateful and wont forget it ever. and thats so beautiful
