Anyone knows how to schedule an appointment for novavax in Montreal? I can't find useful information on quebec.ca, and https://portal3.clicsante.ca/ doesn't seem to advertise it either.
My spouse works in a hospital. They had a training from the ID. They were told that measles was way more contagious than covid. I think covid is getting pretty much as contagious as measles, but what do I know. What was more concerning was that they were told that covid was "a little bit airborne, but mostly droplets".
WTF "a little bit airborne". Mostly droplets? Jfc. We knew it was airborne from the beginning. Why are they doing this? Where are they taking their information, except from "higher up's". It's always ćthe authorities are saying so", it's never "we are basing those decision on the following report".
I sometimes say, half jokingly, that I have PTSD regarding my kids being sick (mostly from stomach flu, not from a life threatening sickness thank god).
Last weekend I was told by a loved one that I might have PTSD from covid pandemic.
I'm not sure what to think of that comment. Yes, I still take precautions. The pandemic never stop in my view. And I'm definitely angry at how everything was handled. "We tried nothing and we are out of ideas".
People have moved on, but we are not in a good situation. Nothing I read shows positive signs. When I point that out I get told that such studies need to be taken with a grain of salt, for example the methodology wasn't sound enough. Sure I get this, it's never all black or white, that's how science moves. The issue I have is that I don't see positive studies at all, good or bad methodology. So all the signals are mostly negative, the question becomes how much negative. Debating how bad a situation is does not make it good.
What I find difficult is to protect my family when the world does not care. I can't put my kids in a bubble. I can't control what my spouse is doing (and I don't want to!) I know I can protect myself, but my efforts are moot if the kids catch anything at school where nobody cares.
I checked my vaccination book, I only had a single MMR shot a one year old. Just got my second dose. With measles cases skyrocketing, everyone should make sure they have TWO doses of MMR!
Got into my first family fight over covid tonight. I don't know what to do. I completely understand their position. The timeline sucks, but the will to go back to "normal" is too strong. I might overestimate the risks, but I feel like society is ignoring them. That's why I have to double down myself. I don't want to catch it at any cost, but that cost is too high.
I was told the risks are low, we are not in the same situation as years ago. That's true at a high level view, there's no hospital overflowing with covid. Everywhere it's "back to normal". But the information I see going around is not encouraging. Excess death is still quite large, I see that the virus affecting affect the body in many ways that are sneaky and difficult to detect on the day to day. I don't see any good news on that front.
In addition to the pain this is causing my family and I, I feel like I sound like a conspiracist. I don't trust our public health even though I would like to. Is it because I don't read every studies and thus missing on nuances? Is it because I'm in my eco chamber and only hear bad news? Am I overestimating the risks? Or maybe the situation is less critical in my region and I'm only seeing things from elsewhere where problems are worse?
I would have hopes for higher impact, I'm sure those numbers will be used to show that the measures were too expensive to be worth it. But in a way I'm not surprised the numbers are that low, as the measures were not necessarily the right one to fight an airborne disease.
@maggiejk Agree, that's what I meant with "the measures were not necessarily the right one to fight an airborne disease". Here we had a curfew for a couple of weeks. I personally didn't care (it's hard to go out at night when you have young kids...) but it wasn't effective and highly polarizing. Air quality norms, (high quality) masks mandates, testing and isolation for example probably would have had a larger impact.
Went to the optometrist today, which nicely offered to wear a mask. I was told they kept the plexiglass on the examination apparatus even though their order said they could remove them.
While I'm glad to not receive fomites I mentioned covid was airborne.
I understand all the tension surrounding this, but when the reply was "if you believe so" I was disappointed. No, it's not a "believe", it's accepted science.
I could be wrong, but I haven't seen a single study showing fomite transmission was dominant. Is there any? I don't think droplets transmission is impossible, but I do believe it's kind of useless to protect against fomites if you don't protect against aerosols. It's like trying to extinguish a forest fire with a garden hose. You might prevent a tree or two from burning, but that will have zero effect overall.
I simply gave the smoking analogy; if you can smell the someone's cigarette, you are probably in a risky situation.
@PacificNic I mean, if you smear fomites in your face, lick it and sniff them, then sure you'll catch it...
I remember one case near the beginning of the pandemic where contact tracing supposedly showed that someone caught it from an elevator button. I didn't read the study, and I don't have its reference (might not even be a study). Anyone remember it?
There's overwhelming evidence that it's airborne, it's crazy that the reaction is simply shoving our heads in the sand. Every study I see in passing says it's airborne. And I don't think it's an echo chamber effect.
A while ago, the unmasked bro at the liquor store clearly thought I was sick when he saw me in my N95. He sanitized his hands TWICE while I stood at the till.
Quebec's PHO today announced 1 million Quebeckers caught a respiratory virus (covid, rsv, flu) in the last week. That's more than 10% the population. What was their recommendation? "Please don't go to the ER as they are overcrowded".
Went to the dentist today. Only client in a mask. Dentist was wearing a baggie blue, with gaps everywhere as large as my open mouth. She did asked about my N95 and was honestly interested in it. She asked me where she could buy them.
A dentist. Not knowing where to buy PPE. After 4 years of this crap. Of course we can't buy them anywhere irl.
For my Canadian friends, just visit 3M's website, search for "9210". On the right side there will be a section for where to buy, choose online options. Pick the seller you prefer.
Gave that info to the dentist who seemed glad about it. Happy to have shared that info, but how much of a failure PH is if even dentist don't have useful and up to date info...

The always great Kurzgesagt on why our brain has trouble adapting to social media. One suggestion? Smaller communities, like on mastodon! :D

@trendless@scrivolical On firefox mobile (android) I get a cert error (I unfortunately cannot see details, just a plain "secure connection failed"). On Chrome mobile it worked...
The report title is "Experiences of Canadians with long-term symptoms following COVID-19", a DDG search should find it fine...
@trendless@scrivolical Isn't this cert not expired? November 2024... Could a different cert be served on Firefox Android? Or maybe something in there that Firefox doesn't like but Chrome doesn't care... 🤷
