Hell yes. The rough draft prototypes for Jumperless V5 are done!

And the fact that all 445 LEDs light up rules out a good chunk of the "I'm a complete dumbass" end of the hardware design fuck ups spectrum.

I got the mostly-salvaged-river-parts e-bike, aka E-xpand-o-bike, into enough shape this afternoon to take it on a ride around the block.

I still need to fabricate a mount for the battery and the controller and do all the cable routing, but it works!

And it looks peak mad scientist on meth right now, so I had to show a picture to the Fediverse.

@MLE_online I'm sure there are a million reasons why this is a terrible idea, but what about stuffing the frame with a bunch of 18650s?

On the upside, you don't have to make your own warning labels. You can just get some stickers from the band "This Bike is a Pipe Bomb"

ArchiteuthisFlux,
@ArchiteuthisFlux@hackaday.social avatar

@MLE_online I like the idea that if you actually made a bike into a pipe bomb, you'd get stickers professionally printed to label it as such.

Okay I don't think I've ever come across a brain teaser this hard in a datasheet before.
Like, it's totally fine and I can just put the pads where it feels right. But if someone can prove the exact placement to me, I will actually send you a free Jumperless for being a friggin genius.

A view of that whole page for additional context

Found another free bike in the trash pile across the street from my house

ArchiteuthisFlux,

@MLE_online When I was a kid, I put a big cushy cruiser seat sticking up like 2 feet from the frame on my BMX bike.

It came to be known as "Kevin style" when my friends got into the whole downhill biking nerd thing and I'd do the same trails with them in my "shit I found in the garage" Frankenbike.

I wish I had thought to make mine Velveeta colored though.

I thought putting a button under an OLED would be the hackiest thing I did this week, but here we are.

The fact that there's a nonzero chance of this working is still blowing my mind.

ArchiteuthisFlux, to random

Okay, how much do you all hate this? Cantilevering an OLED module over a tact switch and pressing on the screen itself to click.

I found this thing lying on the sidewalk yesterday. It is atrociously marketed as a disposable vape.

There's not much to it, but it has a usb-c port, so it must have a rechargeable battery. It also must have some kind of heating element, a reservoir for The vape juice, and some way of knowing to turn on the heating element when you're inhaling

Wire wrapping with a legit wire wrap tool is so fucking pleasant. It makes me wonder what other awesome things have those old-timers been hiding from us.

brb, I'm gonna go see if writing checks at grocery stores and objectifying women is as much fun as wire wrapping.

5 EL cryrillonumeric displays lighting up each segment

ArchiteuthisFlux,
@ArchiteuthisFlux@hackaday.social avatar

@MLE_online I was digging around for something to drive a bunch of pins and found a tube of ATmega328s. And for a second, I considered just building 5 of those discontinued EL Sequencers you have from scratch so I could just reuse this code from 2 years ago.

https://github.com/Architeuthis-Flux/Cyrillonumeric_EL_Display_driver

Also, if you need this radio this radio as an enclosure, that opening in the faceplate fits 6 of those bigger displays to the friggin' millimeter.

@MLE_online If it helps your brainstorming, the knob is super heavy and smooth so you can throw it pretty far. It would be sick to have that as an input for something.

Dreamt about an X-men movie whose climax occurred in the parking lot of a Walmart set somewhere like West Texas. Mutants divided into two warring parties battled each other amongst parked cars out on the asphalt.

Right when it looked like the tide of the fight was turning, an enormous tornado appeared on the horizon, flanked by two smaller tornadoes.

The mutants tried to flee to safety inside the store, but most were sucked away by the twisters.

I didn't write Jumperlab btw, Niklas Cathor bought a Jumperless a while back and took it upon himself to write this amazing GUI to control it, along with a TUI in Rust that serves as a backend. Absolute fucking legend.

This is like the ideal Open Source utopia scenario.

@geekmomprojects I love how it takes a noticeable amount of time for the data to move through the strip.
Are you doing something to make that happen or are they just charmingly slow like that?

Now that the number of humans in possession of a Jumperless is approaching 100, I need a ghetto little forum for people to share what they've done with it and get help with technical issues and stuff. And I really don't feel like learning PHP.

So, this is paid gig (+ subsequent paid upkeep) offer.

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with knowing how to build a forum-style website, you may be entitled to financial compensation.

I'll probably have other stuff to do at #Supercon so I figured I'd get badge hacking out of the way beforehand.

If anyone wants to make their own, I'll have all the parts to build another one for whoever wants them.

Someone said I should make my branding less gay. So instead, I'm making it more gay.

But now I'm wondering if glow-in-the-dark stuff is like the little boys equivalent to glitter for little girls.

In that case, these cables are genderfluid, depending on illumination.
