What is a good eli5 analogy for GenAI not "knowing" what they say?

I have many conversations with people about Large Language Models like ChatGPT and Copilot. The idea that “it makes convincing sentences, but it doesn’t know what it’s talking about” is a difficult concept to convey or wrap your head around. Because the sentences are so convincing....

Asifall,

I always thought the Chinese Room argument was kinda silly. It’s predicated on the idea that humans have some unique capacity to understand the world that can’t be replicated by a syntactic system, but there is no attempt made to actually define this capacity.

The whole argument depends on our intuition that we think and know things in a way inanimate objects don’t. In other words, it’s a tautology to draw the conclusion that computers can’t think from the premise that computers can’t think.

Asifall,

I increasingly feel like the best (though imperfect) solution that has a realistic chance of happening is just to make student loans dischargeable in bankruptcy. This would provide people with huge loans and no job prospects a way out while avoiding giving free money to well paid professionals who don’t really need it. It would also incentivize schools to invest tuition dollars in ways to actually help graduates find employment rather than flashy facilities to bring in freshmen.

Poor students would have a harder time finding loans to go to expensive schools but it seems increasingly like elite colleges aren’t much better than public colleges anyway.

Asifall,

Dude what? Bears don’t give a shit about you. Unless you charge the bear it’s going to be fine.

Asifall,

I think that people don’t really understand what it means when they claim they have no plans to retire. My in-laws are always saying things like “I’ll work until I die” while they take out debt to go on vacations but they recently brought up that we should make sure to get an extra bedroom for them if/when we buy a house. The disconnect is infuriating.

Asifall,

Yeah people really do like to pretend putting pocket change into savings will somehow add up to a 7 figure nest egg.

For context: $400 per year for 35 years (making some assumptions about your age) with 8% average market return (probably optimistic tbh) and you wind up with a whopping $84k to retire on

So yeah, shits fucked

Asifall,

Because ram is incredibly cheap and developer hours are incredibly expensive. I think it’s a bit silly too but there’s just no financial incentive for companies to care about memory usage when they know most consumer devices have tons of extra headroom.

Asifall,

What’s the thermal impact of a ram module? Don’t they use like 2 or 3 watts even in a desktop? Can’t be much…

Asifall,

Sounds like a good way to get the feds interested in your otherwise not very notable property crime.

Asifall,

We’ll that’s when I’m on social media…

Asifall,

I read the second half of this in Heath Ledger’s joker voice

Asifall,

No, motion sickness.

Asifall,

I’m not actually sure that would be a bad outcome for dems…but I think the optics would make it a non starter.

Asifall,

But clearly, if we add up all the infinite fractions between 0 and 1, they would add up to 1.

Um no? 3/4 + 5/6 > 1

If you mean the series 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/4 + … that also tends to infinity

Asifall,

Wait until you find out where Indiana University is

Asifall,

For a horrifying take on this check out this short story by qntm

Asifall,

Interesting, I admit that I didn’t realize until I just did a little research that persistence hunting as a significant feature in early humans isn’t actually well supported by much if any evidence.

Are there other theories on why humans seem to be almost uniquely good at distance running? Is it a spandrel?

Asifall,

I recently agonized over this decision a bit and went with a Bambu. When it comes down to it, the prusa printers are just really hard to justify given that you are paying more money for fewer features even if you assemble it yourself.

I agree with what others have said that the reliability and longevity of Bambu printers is a concern, but frankly if I’m still into printing in a number of years and Bambu starts to really enshitify, I’ll build a Voron or get something even better that hasn’t come out yet.

Do non-vegans really refuse to date vegans?

I decided I would be willing to date a non-vegan since despite the conveniences and shared ethics of other vegans, it can be hard to find them in general, and maybe I could influence people positively, though probably without any expectation for them to go vegan (but still hoping society will move toward it one day anyway)....

Asifall,

I grew up with a sister who is vegan and I would definitely think twice before dating one. I’ve come to believe that shared meals are a huge part of human culture and if I can’t eat with my partner without there being some kind of tension about it I don’t see how it could work out.

Asifall,

It’s not that I can’t eat non vegan food while you eat vegan food, it’s that many restaurants don’t have good vegan options, especially if you’re it in a major city, so it limits what kind of places you can eat.

Also, if you live with someone who is vegan your options are either the non vegan accepts a significantly limited diet, or you need shop, plan, and cook two dinners each night. It gets tiresome.

Asifall,

Seems like still basically 0 high speed rail.

Asifall,

But why? I feel like after being high for like 4 hours it starts to lose its appeal.

Google Researchers’ Attack Prompts ChatGPT to Reveal Its Training Data (www.404media.co)

ChatGPT is full of sensitive private information and spits out verbatim text from CNN, Goodreads, WordPress blogs, fandom wikis, Terms of Service agreements, Stack Overflow source code, Wikipedia pages, news blogs, random internet comments, and much more....

Asifall,

It isn’t, but the GDPR requires companies to scrub PII when requested by the individual. OpenAI obviously can’t do that so in theory they would be liable for essentially unlimited fines unless they deleted the offending models.

In practice it remains to be seen how courts would interpret this though, and I expect unless the problem is really egregious there will be some kind of exception. Nobody wants to be the one to say these models are illegal.

Asifall,

Probably to make it feel more realistic. It would be strange if you could fall 50 feet and only take 17 damage

Asifall,

I got one in a niceish area for that. All you have to do is buy a small foreclosure and then spend literal years renovating while you live somewhere else and run up a bunch of high interest credit card debt paying for those renovations. 🥲

Asifall,

Eh, I don’t feel like it’s dangerous as long as you’re in the right hand lane.
