In December 2022, Miranda and her partner, Levi Langley, packed up the whole family, all their possessions and their pet chameleon and set out for Texas. It was time to come home....
I mean, no? In case it wasn’t clear from the article, these are the people that voted for this shit. It’s also ironic they’re already on Medicare (in their 20s) as it is. This should be an ‘I get it now’ moment for these families, but they’ll learn nothing.

Point of note - it’s just ‘Ukraine’, not the Ukraine. ‘The Ukraine’ is a label used by those who see the nation as a region part of Russia. Small, but important thing I had to change when referring to it as well.
I’m pushing 50 and I tend to think that there’s maybe one or two generations left to live before society collapses due to this shit. The copium being taken by some people on where we’re at is pretty nuts, not to mention the outlandish solutions people are proposing like putting reflective particles into the atmosphere to ‘dim the sun’, rather than just do the things scientists have been shouting for decades. I’ve done my part (which amounts to measurably nothing). But as you said, it’s over kids. We’re at the part of a roller coaster ride where the first couple cars have started down that hill and there’s no way to stop the acceleration of everything else, only unlike the roller coaster, the bottom is the end of the ride.
Very true. I mean, people think rising sea levels just means losing beach front property, and they ignore the cataclysmic chain reaction of mass fish die off, acidification, and severe weather. Not to mention the increasing temperatures are allowing for pathogens - in particularly fungi to adapt to higher average temperatures, which means humans (and other mammals) won’t be able to use fevers to fight them off. We’ll continue to see more novel diseases, pandemics, etc. It’s for the best anyway. The sooner the earth can get rid of us, the sooner it can return to equilibrium.
A Common Sense Media report finds about half of 11- to 17-year-olds get at least 237 notifications a day. Some get nearly 5,000 in 24 hours. What does that do to their brains?
The funny thing is this article talks about kids. My Mom is in her 70s and I maintain her phone and she currently uses a pixel 6, so it’s the latest os of course. Whenever I see her, I have to declutter her notifications. They’re constant. Apps and websites have gotten more noisy and aggressive in prompting users to enable notifications or sending constant push crap and I don’t think most people know how to disable them while retaining what they’re actually wanting to get.
I finally have a void kitty myself and I amuse my friends by sending pictures that state there is a cat in this picture. He is so incredibly light absorbent it is insane.

Lawry’s seasoned salt and pepper, 225 for 4 to 6 hours. Meat should pull back from the bone and the break test (rib meat cracks and wants to pull apart when you bend. Temp should be 200 to 205 or so. Some people promote 3/2/1 - smoke for 3 hours, wrap in foil with butter and vinegar then cook another 2, then unwrap, baste with bbq sauce and cook another hour to set the sauce.
Just wanted to shout out your reference to ‘who loves you baby back’. I have made them so many times since, what, 2002? I’ve memorized the recipe, but sometimes I use Guinness instead of wine. There’s no better way to make oven ribs as far a I’m concerned. Reducing the braising liquid takes forever but it’s worth it.
They were the kids most disrupted by the pandemic, the ones who were still learning to write their names and tie their shoes when schools shut down in the spring of 2020....
What I’ve noticed with my partners 13 year old is how little is actually taught. During covid, he got daily lesson plans for home teaching which took a couple of hours at most. He’s been back in person now for 2 years. He gets no homework. He doesn’t seem to be taught or retain any kind of knowledge, yet his grades are ‘good’. Like, he can hardly tell you what countries make up North America, let alone where stares are or anything actually meaningful like history of… Anything. It seems to me the bar has just been lowered. We keep waiting for this to flip, or school to get ‘hard’ but it doesn’t seem to be.

Apple is winning the communications game and I’m afraid I’ll wind up switching once they go usb c. I’m sick and tired of the iMessage walled garden when messaging nearly everyone I know, and also tried of the hit or miss debacle of rcs. I will miss the customization freedom (currently using Niagara launcher and it’s super unique ux), but Android phones have deleted all of the other benefits that separated them from iPhones, like expandable storage, ir blasters, headphone jacks, etc. I hate to jump on the bandwagon, but I’m sick of waiting for this all to be worked out. Before anyone says to use signal or Whatsapp, etc, it just isn’t a standard here in the US. Folks will never switch off iMessage.
President Joe Biden on Tuesday launched a promotional blitz for his new program that helps student loan borrowers repay their debt, just weeks before millions of Americans are set to receive a loan bill for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic....
Not sure how you decided this seeing as this benefits people at the poverty line and not the wealthy. Sure, anything can encourage schools to push up tuition prices, but there’s literally a bill in play right now to cap tuition prices. It’s not loan forgiveness, but it’s far better than nothing. Also, the financial impact is a pittance. It’s not the 50k per borrower floated in 2020. It’s not even the 10k the scotus shot down.
The amount of money most workers want now to accept a job reached a record high this year, a sign that inflation is alive and well at least in the labor market....
“Goods prices have abated…” The fuck they have. Also stop blaming inflation on wage increase. Most of it was caused by opportunistic greed of those aforementioned ‘goods prices’.
Considering how crazy expensive accommodations have become the last couple of years, concentrated in the hands of greedy corporations, landlords and how little politicians seem to care about this problem, do you think we will ever experience a real estate market crash that would bring those exorbitant prices back to Earth?
It used to make sense depending on your area and intended time you were going to rent for. This assumed that rent was significantly less than a mortgage and you were able to save or invest at least some of the difference. That gap has long since evaporated in desirable areas. In many cases, rent is as much as a mortgage. The problem here is that it prevents people from saving for a down payment (which alone could buy a home twenty years ago), and even if they could, homes are being snapped up with all cash offers from investors or corporations… So they can be rented at a profit. It’s insane.
