Routledge finally published our pick-up artist book in paperback. It’s still quite pricy - the problem with the academic publishers - but perhaps affordable if you have a book fund.

We think it’s important to talk about the ‘’, its recruitment practices and inner workings, and this is our contribution to this conversation

I really love book clubs, but I struggle to find an English-speaking one in .

Anyone knows of something like that in Tampere area, or maybe a good online one? Literary fiction and/or sci-fi is my cup of tea!

“The Language of Pick Up Artists” is going to appear in paperback! Which means someone can actually afford to buy it.
Right now, there’s pre-order available for 32 GBP

It’s about how - the most benign slice of the , but also the gateaway to worse groups - teach their paradigm to newbies and talk to women while “seducing” them

In this paper in Nature, the researchers find that essays generated by ChatGPT were rated higher for quality than human-written ones

Interesting on its face, but …

… what really drew my eye was this finding: human students are more likely to use language that conveys “speaker attitude“

I wonder how much of that is due to ChatGPT’s relatively low temperature (to minimize weird results) and/or prompting?

Coocho,

@clive @jasemrau as long as the task of the essay is to smoothly restate the obvious, GenAI will naturally perform better than secondary school level language learners.
The problems begin when any degree of original thinking is involved, for instance, at the university level, when we no longer train the formal writing skills but also pay attention to the content…

It’s minus 17 outside. What does the bad wolf do? She takes her kong and immediately heads to the garden to eat it while cozily curled up in the crunchy snow

I was watching that Netflix show about the history of life on earth, and the one fact that absolutely blew my mind was that the planet was covered by a carpet of lichen and moss and nothing else for 40 million years.

40 million years of the moss’ rule.

Seems like we're privileged to have two pets who are OK with fireworks

Forest (Beagle) occasionally cocks his head at the random noises, but is otherwise indifferent

Pickle (cat) has actually gone out into the chaos, in a manner which suggests he plans to kill whatever it is that's keeping him awake

Coocho,

@Garwboy I’ve a dog who completely ignores fireworks, but totally loses it and bolts if a chunk of snow falls off a lamppost behind her. Dog brain 🤷🏻‍♀️

Coocho,

@eugenia_diegoli @academicchatter I once waited 9 years for smth to start happening :) it did come out in the end

Coocho,

@eugenia_diegoli @academicchatter it was upsetting in the beginning because it was very early in my career. But as publications accumulate, any single one doesn’t really matter that much, so you just forget about the ones that take long!
In your case, sounds like you can officially withdraw and resubmit elsewhere tbh

Fellow and other northern country dwellers, do you use daylight lamps? What are your impressions?

Coocho,

@Neverfadingwood the name kind of suggests that it SHOULD help with emotions!

I'm re- reading my & Sofia's chapter "Talking about women: Elicitation, manual tagging, and semantic tagging in a study of pick-up artists’ referential strategies" for the first time in ages.
I somehow remembered it as one of the least favourite things we wrote, but it's actually pretty cool!☺️
It's in https://benjamins.com/catalog/scl.98, let me know if you'd like the pdf - happy to share!

I often joke about how Belya would welcome any robber into the house, kiss him and show him where the valuables are stored (because she loooves people, especially strangers). But actually she can tell the difference just fine. Today some weird drunk guy showed up at the door and scared me trying to push inside, and she was right there, growling and showing her teeth.
He decided not to engage with a 40 kilo malamute. Who is a sweetheart.

Came across this chapter on by Tim Grant - I loved the sophisticated theoretical discussion about the idea of idiolect and cognitive & stylistic frameworks!
Also, can I just say “4n6” is genius 😁 not going to spell the word any other way from now on

Is there a word in English that you’ve always wanted to use but never found a chance?

I’ll go first: mellifluous

(And that’s me who manages to regularly use things like “artifact” or “onomatopoeia” in non-academic conversation)

By the way, if anyone knows

  • Finnish scholars or professionals working on forensic linguistics
  • Finnish legislation regarding admissibility of linguistic evidence

I remember when Twitter exodus to mastodon started back in November, there were a few studies gathering data about mastodon use/communities/language/ perceived norms.

Do we know if any of them are published already? And anyway, any cool research on mastodon, preferably with a linguistic focus?..

I wonder, does anyone still teach hybrid classes? What about remote?

I personally would be perfectly happy to continue that way - more flexibility for both students and the instructor.

I have to admit though, it must be really hard for students to maintain the engagement necessary for learning on zoom. I feel it myself in my remote Finnish class: the temptation to turn off your video and tune out is irresistible sometimes. So I guess ultimately there’s no alternative to f2f seminars

Coocho,

@Neverfadingwood for me as a teacher it’s not a problem (although yes, I’d appreciate more videos on). I’m mostly talking a out the students.
Also, definitely more people dropped out without getting credit during the zoom times, but of course it’s hard to say anything conclusive as there were plenty of other variables apart from remote learning, like a pandemic for example…
