How to Figure Out What Your Car Knows About You (and Opt Out of Sharing When You Can) (www.eff.org)

Cars collect a lot of our personal data, and car companies disclose a lot of that data to third parties. It’s often unclear what’s being collected, and what’s being shared and with whom. A recent New York Times article highlighted how data is shared by G.M. with insurance companies, sometimes without clear knowledge from...

DeepChill,

If they have airbags and ABS they know a shitload more than you think.

DeepChill,

Yeah, just ask any Tesla driver who also has Tesla insurance. I’d be screwed HARD as I go to work when it’s still dark out and according to Tesla that makes me a huge risk.

DeepChill,

Well, if you think connected apps are the only way cars invade your privacy…. That’s cute, good for you.

Road speed, accelerator position, brake pedal position, number of seatbelts buckled or not, GPS position and heading, time since key on and probably at least a dozen other parameters I can’t think of off the top of my head are all being recorded. Those certainly are personal data that can and will be used against you in the event of a crash.

Walkie talkie. Do you use it?

I’ve tried it with my SO during a visit to IKEA. So when we were apart for a few minutes I was able to give an update where I am or what was interesting so look at. But in public I found it rather awkward others listening to our conversation. And now I can’t think of other use cases. So how, when, where and with whom do you...

DeepChill,

Tried it when it first launched. Haven’t used it since. Feels extra dumb holding your Watch to your mouth like you’re Inspector Gadget. Just use your phone. I also never use Siri in public and I think people who walk around in public using their phone exclusively in speakerphone mode should be shot.

DeepChill,

I’m going to knock your socks off… The vast majority of “normal” EVs don’t have gears as such. There are one or two supercar EVs that have a high and low gear but that’s it. Many hybrids don’t have gears either. My Accord Hybrid has an “eCVT” which is just marketing bullshit for covering up the fact that it’s functionally an EV with a gasoline powered generator. Honda has programmed the ECU to do fake shifts to make boomers feel more comfortable with the new technology. It’s only imitating an automatic transmission with software trickery. The gas engine isn’t even mechanically connected to the wheels for like 95% of the driving I do. IIRC that tech was borrowed or heavily influenced by the Prius.

DeepChill,

Quickly becoming a moot point. EVs don’t even have gears to shift. Single speed forward or reverse. Shifting gears will eventually be like dialing a rotary phone.

Backpack recommendations?

I’m looking for recommendations for a backpack that will be used for commuting to work. What I’m looking for would have one large compartment that I could put a shirt and a pair of pants in, a Bluetooth speaker, a large Contigo water bottle and maybe some miscellaneous stuff. I don’t want a hundred pockets and compartments...

[Vote] Should we pre-emptively defederate Threads? (sh.itjust.works)

Threads will be implementing federation in the near future and many instances have been discussing whether they should be pre-emptively defederated to protect the fediverse. See below for our local discussion thread, which will remain active until this vote is complete....

DeepChill,

Aye. Keep Fuckerburg out of the Fediverse.

DeepChill,

“Pay yourself first”. My bank has a feature that allows me to setup automated money transfers to and from different accounts based on rules I setup. The most important one is when any deposit is received from my employer, 20% of the amount is automatically transferred from my chequing account to my retirement account. My paycheque is deposited overnight and the money is already “gone” by the time I wake up in the morning. Treat it like another tax on your income that you have no way to avoid paying. Then live off what’s left.

DeepChill,

I’m in favour of anything that prevents Meta’s enshittification of everything.

  • DeepChill,

Hmmm. I wonder what this means for something like a boot allowance? My employer thinks a pair of CSA steel toe boots still costs $100. Any real boots that won’t make your feet bleed after a couple hours will set you back $250+ and when you wear them all day every day for work you’re lucky to get a whole year out of them.

    DeepChill, (edited )

I bought one of these a couple years ago and it still lasts 12+ hours streaming internet radio from my iPad at work. Sounds great for background music in a shop. I love how sturdy it feels and the handle is great. I call it “Nintendo plastic” cuz it feels indestructible like the OG Nintendo controllers.

Soundcore Anker Motion Boom Outdoor Speaker a.co/d/7ptVcCe

Just to clarify… I work 12hr shifts and it still has about 40% battery left at the end of the day.

    DeepChill,

Because there are still huge numbers of people alive today that grew up and went to school before Canada officially switched to metric. Don’t forget that we’re trapped by the Americans. Where I live I can literally see the individual buildings in the city across the river which is upstate New York. There are several radio stations along the border that do their weather reports in both °C and °F. Personally… I’m 6ft tall, 235Lbs, every liquid is in litres and temperatures are in Celsius. My oven has both F and C. Driving in Canada is usually measured in time when speaking to people. I know that Toronto is about 4hrs away on a good day and it can be 7hrs on a bad day in the winter. Don’t get me started on accidents or construction. I have no idea how far it is in KM. I’m guessing maybe 400km since the speed limit is 100kph and it takes 4hrs to get there.

FWIW, I’m 45yrs old. So I’m really trapped in between the two systems. I prefer metric but my parents and many coworkers were born and raised pre-metrification.

Driving instructor is telling my mom to actively use the car's rear camera to parallel park, does that sound acceptable?

DriveTest.ca website even says the camera shouldn’t be used for assisting, but this guy seems to want her to look at the tracing drawn by the rear camera to calculate the positioning and the turns she’s supposed to make. That sounds crazy to me. Should she look for another instructor? She was recommended this one by...

    DeepChill,

Then he’s an idiot who shouldn’t be be teaching anyone how to drive. This is how we end up with so many shitty drivers on the road. People who rely too heavily on electronic systems instead of actual skill. Have you ever paid attention to the little lights on people’s wing mirrors (blind spot monitoring) when they pass you on the highway… You think 8-10ft is a safe distance to cut back in front of someone when you’re travelling 100+ on the highway? NO!

    DeepChill,

Apple Music because it’s fully functional/supported across all Apple devices. I have iPhones, iPads, Watches, MacBook, HomePods & Apple TVs. No need to screw around with trying to airplay Spotify to a HomePod when it’s just available natively with Apple Music. Apple Music can be integrated into “scenes” in the Home app. Apple Music can stream over cellular on an Apple Watch. I pay for Apple One Premier and share with 5 family members, FWIW.

    DeepChill,

It’s not streaming but this guy is as good as I’ve found. This season he’s even upgraded to 4K.

    DeepChill,

All Safari for me. Keeps iPhone, iPad and Mac experience the same and syncs everything perfectly.
