I sorta really hate that everyone I know from Twitter would rather sit around waiting for an invite to blue sky. THEN NOT USE IT. Instead of looking for a fedi server to join.

Bluesky is barebones, they only JUST NOW added a manual content warning for images.

@RubyFfxiv Really, that's just how you do it. Super simple and usually totally seamless. Looks like you're talking to me from mastodon.social. I'm on mstdn.party.

By "fedi server" I really just mean any kind of mastodon/misskey/pleroma/whathaveyou server. I'll try to spare you a big tl;dr, typically people just think of "mastodon". There's tons of options and lots of people hosting sites with open signups. They're all interconnected, too.

If you're new to Mastodon, remember there is no algorithm here. It takes a little bit of effort to find people that interest you. Search for hashtags and use hashtags in your posts. Hashtags are very important here.

Don't spend 5 minutes looking around and give up. Take some more time to get good content in your timeline and you'll have a much better experience. This place is what you make it. You're in control.

@jcrabapple It's also a pretty good idea to try searching your favorite hashtags on other instances. I'll often find new people to follow that weren't federated with my instance.

@Sarnen Depending on what app you're using, you can choose how your images crop by pressing edit on the upload. Seems to be a Mastodon feature in general.

I think I'll keep this as my main account on the fediverse. For now. I've been hopping all over checking out the various types of servers and software available to see how things work around here.

I'll continue the rest of my run on thoughts about fedi/masto and how I'll run my accounts in a thread below.

Pixelfed looks really cool for this sort of thing;sharing images. I spend a lot of time on Twitter though, so Mastodon has a very familiar appeal.

I'm also not quite sure if Pixelfed has social/blogging features.

What I have come to understand though is that Mastodon makes up most of what I see here on the Fediverse. I've seen a few posts mentioning that it has the most widely used api. Perhaps even the most accessible.

I can't afford a self hosted solution at the moment, so I'll probably be parking my presence across various platforms here on fedi. You'll likely see me boosting a bunch of random accounts of mine with similar names as this one.

A personal Kbin magazine for my work seems like fun, or maybe a Pixelfed account. We'll see.

#1 I wanted to outlast Elon
#2 I had/have a lot of people there who I didnt want to lose contact with
