so mine is kind of situational, but while I have a really hard time taking care of myself, I’m always able to get up and do things for my dogs. they need to be let out, shown affection (which is also good for depression!), fed, etc. it helps that they like to lay in bed with me and are very forgiving when it comes to timing on, say, when they’re fed.

honestly I just think having something to care for in these situations can be very helpful, but it also depends on the person.

Stardew Valley! but…extremely modded SDV. I’m playing multiplayer with my partner and we have almost 60 mods going. quite a few of them are aesthetic but we have some area expansions and stuff like that as well. I really like tweaking the game so that it’s more difficult, I’ve played it so much (over 300 hours!) that it’s more appealing to me that way.

I love modding games in general. it’s my curse.

I really enjoy the Hardware Haven videos. He makes things more understandable for a newbie like me.

Rotating banners on /r/piracy (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

Hey mates, recently I’ve developed a tool to use the GenerativeAI on the AI Horde to created random avatars and banners on lemmy. To keep things spicy, I wanted to deploy to rotate the /c/piracy banner daily, as I’ve done in a bunch of other communities like !stable_diffusion_art and the lemmy.dbzer0.com....

I don’t talk here but I am a user and this community has helped me a whole hell of a lot. I’ll see if I can get a donation heading your way when I next get paid! thanks for your hard work.

Ava Max - So Am I (www.youtube.com)

I love Ava Max so much! I saw someone else had posted Choose Your Fighter so I chose a different song that other people might not have heard. it’s one of her older ones, but I use it for a character I write (like many of her songs, tbh, she’s just really good for my inspiration) so I hear it a lot and wanted to share.

why no hope for Revolt? I had looked into it self hosting wise, but when I realized they had made it really difficult, I lost interest and haven’t been following it since.

aaaaaaaa Persona 3’s remake finally came out!!

I was a little too young to be playing the game when it first came out, but it really left a mark on me and I’ve always wanted Atlus to update the game. I started with FES on the playstation 2. and when I tell you I was so excited for Persona 4 that I called every video game retail store in the city until they said they had a copy and immediately went and bought it, I’m not lying.

so far really loving the remake! I’ve been busy with another hobby so I haven’t gotten to finish it. the voice acting is great (Akihiko is really the voice I felt strongly about out of the entire cast that I liked, and I know the voice actor from work in Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail, and of course he knocked it out of the park. so did Allegra Clark, as my favorite character in the game, Mitsuru) and while I know reviewers complained about Tartarus being copy paste environments with the same enemies over and over, it really hit good for me and brought back memories.

other than that, playing Honkai: Star Rail (taking a long break from Genshin, because I’m really frustrated with how it’s being handled overall) and trying to pace myself with the content since Sparkle’s banner is going to last for another ten years. I’m so excited for Acheron (also voiced by Allegra Clark!) that I’ve prefarmed almost everything for her, short of her relics. there’s a reason my Discord status is “I love you in every universe” with a Raiden Ei emoji, hahaha.

this sounds fascinating!

I’ve only ever once commissioned art of my characters before (just one, and it was a rough sketch with some canons from a video game) but I know it made me really excited and it’s been my phone’s lock screen for four years. I have no artistic talent so to see one of my creations come to life still makes me smile.

what made Chris choose the name Solemn? what made you as the writer decide to write this kind of main character? who are the political activists? and lastly, what made you choose the afterlife as a setting?

those are just some questions that came to me off the top of my head! I know how much I love talking about writing so I wanted to give you the space to gush and chat about yours.

hey! sorry replying to this took so long, I have had some mental health struggles.

I can definitely relate to writing about those topics. I feel like it’s a really good way to cope, because it’s what I used my entire childhood as well, but also to explore those issues in a controlled environment. although I wouldn’t call it someone extending “pity” towards you, you’re seeking sympathy, and I know it’s easy to fall into that trap but wording is important!

I used to always write younger characters (though they were always teenagers) being taken care of by an older character, always an adoptive sibling situation, because I have no siblings but always wanted one. parents were never part of it. I think you and I want the same things in our writing – the healing aspect is really important instead of breaking the character over and over, which is something I see a lot of writers enjoy in the spaces I used to be in. it’s something I think is important for people to see (even though I don’t write publicly anymore), especially people who might be going through their own struggling.

I envy your ability to write sci-fi, I’ve never been able to write it in a way I was happy with. my favorite has always been “soft sci-fi” or “sci-fi that makes sense but we’re not going to do any math or science okay?” hahaha. just because unless it’s pretty simple (which yours sounds like it is) my poor single brain cell fries itself trying to remember and parse everything.

when you say reincarnation pods that determine what your new body is based on what psyche wants, does that mean even if people reincarnate, they don’t leave the afterlife? and also, does that mean you don’t really have any control over it? so someone who, say, is not in touch with or not open to admitting they’re something (like take gender identity for example) might end up having to stare that in the face? if so, I think that’s really cool! it makes for a really interesting plot to explore, even if you as the author don’t end up taking that route for any of the characters.

I love that choice for Chris’s new name! Solemn is also just really pretty. the choice to use a name change to represent starting anew is also very nice.

when you say “beefed up seraph”, what does that entail? extra powers?

and can you tell me more about Solemn’s new family? I love secondary/supporting characters. I have a curse with them ending up my favorites.

I’m not currently in a place where I would be very good at reading the WIP, but I do really appreciate you extending the offer. I understand if you can’t reveal too much because of you working on it, too! and of course, I wish you lots of luck and inspiration in that process.

So relieved to see my usual charity to donate to (K9s for Warriors) is highly rated on charity navigator. I was hoping they were a good one.

My other one is Lockwood Animal Rescue Center, but they have a tiny bit lower score.

Thank you for sharing the site for charity navigator. Ultimately I agree that the best charity is subjective. I heard about those two from other people and they’re subjects I feel passion about.

having come from reddit, where I was ignored or didn’t feel safe commenting, Beehaw is a breath of fresh air. and it makes me hopeful.

I don’t really participate in Discord servers anymore (after watching several explode) so this is a lot of my social interaction. I’m still not super confident in my ability to engage (especially on topics I don’t know a lot about, but I like learning, so I like to read those threads regardless) because similar to what someone else mentioned in the thread, I don’t know that I have a lot of value to add.

I really enjoy my time here, is what I’m trying to say. I told my partner immediately after reading this “wherever they go, I’ll follow” and I meant it. this is also my first experience with Lemmy, but I’m not attached to the software. what works for the community works for me.

just trying to offer words of support! you guys 1000% deserve it. so happy I came back.

Not sure if the first part of my question counts, since it’s about indoor plants, but I have an aloe plant and haworthia (I think is what it’s called) and while the haworthia is doing well, the aloe plant started to have it’s stalks in the center turn brown. I’ve tried giving it more sun like someone recommended to me, but it doesn’t seem to be improving. However, it does seem to still be growing.

I have one outside plant, a hyacinth, and it’s already started to come up, which is exciting even though it started kind of early(?) but I had a question. When it initially bloomed, it was super top heavy and flopped over. I couldn’t get it to right itself no matter what I did. Anyone got any tips?

I might be able to plant some more flowers this fall, but I’m not sure what to go with. I would love to do roses in memory of my grandparents, but I don’t think they would do well in my area.

I actually had some issues with root rot previously, but those cleared up. however, because of that, I moved it into a smaller pot (a friend actually told me to, and advocated for a cut in half water bottle when I said I didn’t have anything else smaller) and while it did okay for a bit, now it has the browning center. I tried giving it some more sun like someone said I should, but that didn’t help.

I can certainly try to repot it, I have some soil leftover from when I went to a greenhouse, same place I got my haworthia. and thank you for the tip on the hyacinth!

I always do my best to make sure he’s happy and healthy, of course! he’s recently gotten on some anti-anxiety medication which has been doing a lot of work in helping in that too, so I’m really grateful for it.

I hope you get to see your cat soon too! where are you traveling?

DreamyRin,
@DreamyRin@beehaw.org avatar

yes! Bowser likes fetch but only a little, he much prefers to hold a tennis ball in his mouth while one of my mom’s dogs plays with him. I’m hoping to get him and my mom’s very skittish dog Maggie out for walks now that it’s nicer out (Maggie loves being outside, she’s just fearful.)

ooo, can you explain “cooperative care activity” a bit? I feel like even though I was a professional, I’m such a novice at training and dog care.

saving this article for later! thank you much.

Champion does shockingly well with the groomer (related, I know you can’t go to the groomer every time your dog goes running through the woods, of course!) I picked for him, but she’s a very kind and gentle person, especially with dogs. he likes her a lot, which I’m very grateful for. that said, working with my dogs is something I enjoy so I think exposing him to the stuff in the article (and Bowser too) would be beneficial anyway.

DreamyRin,
@DreamyRin@beehaw.org avatar

I have tried different music with him, yup! he seems very partial to lo-fi, which is nice because I enjoy listening to it as well. my preference is to just leave it on for the dogs since it’s helped them stay mellow during the day, but my mom isn’t really into it.

and oh, I know how that goes! if I even leave to go to the grocery store (which is a couple blocks away, so I’m only gone a short period of time) or take a walk, Bowser and Champion will wait near the door until I return. they’re like “no!! mom!! no leave!! only stay!!” hahaha.

I stand by Persona being my favorite game series of all time (3 was my first one, but 4 is very good too) but those are available on Steam now so aren’t a great recommendation. but if you’re taking games that are in other places as well, I would say Disgaea (2 was my favorite) and Devil May Cry (3 was my favorite.)

I would echo what someone else said here about Jak and Daxter and Ratchet and Clank. I know it wasn’t as popular as some of the other games in the series, but Ratchet: Deadlocked was the first game I beat multiple times in a row.

I also played a bit of Dark Cloud 2 and never got too far in, but heard a lot of good things.

Who else has silly cues for their dog?

Back when I was training folks on how to work with their dogs I had a mantra that “training should be fun for everyone”. While part of that was advice on how to engage their dogs with training games, the other piece of that was that the humans should be having fun with the training as well. Part of that was having cue words...

DreamyRin,
@DreamyRin@beehaw.org avatar

when I worked at a dog daycare and was taking training classes, the trainer stressed that we should try to make the “praise” word we used when doing training something unique, not like “good boy/girl” or similar. the one they taught in class was “yes” by default, which is what I used when I started.

now it’s become “thank you” which, even though it’s longer, makes me laugh when I think about it.

I’ll have to take some inspiration from this thread! I’m working with my dog Bowser lately on learning new commands.

DreamyRin,
@DreamyRin@beehaw.org avatar

I had honestly never had it occur to me to use “low energy” and “high energy” markers! that’s a great idea. “wow” is also great! I’ve been out of training stuff for a couple years since quitting the daycare job, so I’ve been working on this stuff on my own when I can.

I appreciate you teaching me something new today.

I’m going to tentatively poke my head back in here after being gone for a while.

I play two gacha games and have managed to set down the one I’ve played the longest in favor of the one I enjoy more, so I’ll count that as a win. I’ve started getting back into a hobby I started last year, but I got really overwhelmed and burned out. so now I’m back, hopefully, trying to take that slow.

I started writing fanfiction again recently after almost two decades out of spite because I didn’t like where the game’s writing went. and I think lastly I’m just grateful my dogs are healthy, one had a bacterial infection that just cleared up last week.

I hope everyone else’s week is going well so far!
