what's your favourite way to simplify your life with git? mostly interested in slightly unusual tricks to reduce the number of git features you're using, like:

  • never using the stash, just creating temporary branches instead
  • deleting your main branch so that you can never accidentally commit to it

@b0rk I don't know if it's just normal git works but I've become more and more reliant on checkout to also just remove work I want to abandon. I used to only use it to create and start new branches, but find it such a nice cleanup tool

what would you call a git commit that can no longer be reached from any branch or reference (for example because you ran git commit --amend or git rebase), but that you can still get to from git reflog?

I've considered "orphan", "dangling", and "unreachable" but none of these seem right:

  • orphan has another meaning in git
  • dangling only refers to the "tip" commits
  • "unreachable" means that you can't reach it at all

would love a term that's already used, I don't like inventing terms

📣 Leadership changes at rOpenSci

After 13 years at the helm of rOpenSci, our founding executive director Karthik Ram @inundata is stepping down. Noam Ross @noamross rOpenSci’s current lead for peer review, will be our new Executive Director.

Karthik will remain a key advisor to rOpenSci. We thank him for his years of leadership and service to the community! 🙌

@lars @nicole I just bought some lovely decaf beans and grind them for my morning coffee. I need to keep away from stimulants a while, but I've been missing my coffee. These are such a great roast and so yummy. I'm so happy to get a good cup of Joe in the morning without a racing heart.

Is it customary for a bike shop to clean your chain and gearing while doing a tune up? I took mine in the other day and they had tightened the wires and trued up the back wheel, but the chain was as I left it, still kinda gunky.

@zkamvar during a tune up I'd definitely expect it as part of the deal. If it was in for some other ailment, not chain related, I would not expect it

Another super frustrating thing about having depression and anxiety, is that medical professionals will forever doubt any recount of ailments they can't verify via blood samples to be of psychiatric origin.

I'm not ashamed of having mental illness, I would say I was depressed if I was depressed. It's not a problem.

But I know when I'm not depressed, it's so blatantly obvious to me that I'm not depressed, my mood is surprisingly good given my shitty health situation.

Copyright folks: I scraped (tbh downloaded the pages) of an official government website, where each page represents publicly available information (due to transparency laws). However, the site has been shut down for some financial reason. This is a public record that is now gone.

My question is:
What is the copyright law on html? Because the contents being presented is public domain, so it’s only the html (I didn’t fetch the css or js). Can I republish all these pages to make the info available again? I’d make some new CSS and possibly tweak the html, but is there copyright on page layout? If so, I need to figure out who has those rights, I’m hoping it’s the government agency (and not the private contractor), but tbh I don’t know how they rig their contracts.

@pygy @Patricia id second this. if you can with little effort tur content into md, then it would be fairly easy to get some pages rendering it. But, that might as well be just as much work as changing the html, which you weren't too keen on doing. 🤷

I'm glad to see some personal growth in myself.

I just got the first funding proposal I was principal on rejected by CZI EOSS, and I'm fine. I get it. My project was smallish, and that there are larger more impactful projects to fund makes sense.

Am I sad? Sure, it would have been awesome to get funding to take the project to the next level. But all in good time.

I got to sit down and reflect around my project, what I wanted it to develop into and how to do that. And I got to get excited about it.

I will continue to pursue funding, and work on it when time and work allows.
