"Long before the day of the election, Trump supporters seemed keenly aware of his tenuous chances of victory in the upcoming election...At 2:21 am on November 4, Fox News correctly called Arizona for former VP Joe Biden. This was the proverbial nail in the Trump campaign’s coffin...With the loss now essentially final, Trump associates kicked their seditious conspiracy into motion...Here is the story of the attempted soft coup to overthrow the United States of America." https://medium.com/@evidencefiles/just-say-we-won-193d373eec6b

Why is anyone shocked at the state of politics in the USA where:
-uni-lingual people think multi-lingual people who speak Eng w/an accent are dumber than they are
-there are people who believe the Earth is flat
-less than a quarter can name even half the SCOTUS judges
-less than half know how a bill becomes a law
-people believe more guns will solve gun crimes
-people who complain about crime support a candidate facing 88 criminal charges
-people think weather and climate are the same thing

With a decade investigating public corruption, I started a law and politics blog at Medium. My Substack will focus more on science, tech, and environment. Feel free to visit either! https://medium.com/@evidencefiles/one-party-rule-is-coming-5b5c2c719fa2

Since I returned to the US and have been watching YouTube from an American IP address, I am somehow still astonished at what an ad-ridden trash heap it has become.

The Guardian: Whistleblower urges Boeing to ground all 787 Dreamliners after safety warning

NATIONALIZE this GODDAMNED company.

@YusufToropov I just got off two flights, both dreamliners. One had no issues. The other shut down two bathrooms 1.5 hrs into a 15 hour flight. A "blowout" of another type... and no less an emergency.

Imagine the irony that humans built civilization on about a dozen millenia of stable climate, and they will destroy it in a few centuries of their own destabilization of that same climate... because of the way they built civilization.

Here's a half-formed thought I need to mull a bit on:

Somehow, algorithmic (and especially "AI-driven") decision making tends to only be proposed in contexts where it can only — or mostly — affect those with the least power in the system.

Migrants and asylum seekers.
Prisoners.
Families using any form of state support (child benefits, foodstamps, etc).
Palestinians in Gaza.

It somehow never gets proposed for use-cases where it might affect the wealthy and powerful.

One wonders why. 🤔

🧵/1

EALS_Director,
@EALS_Director@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@vfrmedia @rysiek it is also the differential of access. AI is predominantly owned by the rich and powerful. The resources needed to employ it put it out of reach for most others, and the datasets needed to leverage it against the rich or powerful are controlled (if not owned) by... the rich and powerful.

EALS_Director,
@EALS_Director@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@rysiek @vfrmedia I tend to concur, though I am torn by the idea of playing equally dirty (i.e. deploying flawed systems to make a point). Nonetheless, sometimes I wonder whether any victory can ever come from remaining 'above' the worst people (from a moral high-ground point of view).

Sometimes the ‘what’s wrong with substack’ crowd gets very defensive about people saying ‘I don’t like and won’t use substack’. I thought freedom and no moderation was the core tenet of your belief: it should extend to others’ freedom to dislike substack as well

EALS_Director,
@EALS_Director@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@skinnylatte I agree with this. The vitriol seems to arise from either side when it becomes a judgment of whether someone else uses it or not. A microcosm of our political and social environment these days, it seems.

EALS_Director,
@EALS_Director@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@skinnylatte I agree on the sentiment about fascists and their ilk, but it doesn't seem productive to attack users/non-users unless there is sufficient context to warrant it (i.e. using the platform to spread hateful propaganda or whatever).

@Wen it is a method that follows scientific principles, so I think it is fair to call it that, no?

EALS_Director,
@EALS_Director@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@Wen I didn't call it that in the article, so maybe it was just an unartful post.

EALS_Director,
@EALS_Director@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@Wen I agree with your point, so I exchanged 'science' for 'concept'. I hope that suits it better.

EALS_Director,
@EALS_Director@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@Wen I very much appreciate that, and I am always happy to hear proper critiques. Although, now you have me paying extra attention to my words as tomorrow I am giving a Ted talk and don't want to leave a stinking bomb in the room like that!

It is after midnight here and I'm stuck awake despite having a day-long session tomorrow on early warnings for natural disasters. I'm distressed by how challenging it is to continue the fight to fund projects to assist people facing extraordinary climate change issues. What galls me most is that we could fund them all with the money Jeff Bezos makes in a single hour. You can see our activities at https://www.ealsglobal.org/ and https://volunteercorpsnepal.org/

More than 60 corporations paid zero federal taxes the year after Trump's 2017 tax cuts, despite making billions and profiteering off of inflated prices. https://itep.org/notadime/

Was talking to a 30-some year old European guy who cannot wrap his head around how media and commentators talk about Trump's polling or the 'matchup' with Biden. He was shocked that Trump is viewed as a candidate at all. He didn't say it, but it screamed from his expression, "WTF is wrong with you people?" He did say, "how is talking about it that way a thing?"

Things I learned at the environmental conference so far (from mere observation). 1- cats might be the last mammal left, they are extraordinary survivalists and perfectly content on their own; 2- urban humans will be the first mammal to go, they can't handle an absence of electricity or heat; 3- every other species is banking on 2 for their long-term happiness

Banning protest is itself an act of violence. Why? Because you leave the people with two choices: suffer violence in silence; or face violence in protest.

I wonder if, even among some Dems but definitely among the right, that concerns over Biden's age has more to do with the color and gender of the potential next President if Biden were not to survive his second term than over his performance as current President so far.
