Lemmy isn't one server room. I'm not gonna pretend to know enough about it too understand how a million new users would affect the platform as a whole, but if they are spread across instances as intended (which hasn't worked perfectly so far, admittedly), things should be ok.
President Joe Biden is kicking off a more than $42 billion plan to give every American household access to high-speed internet by 2030. The initiative is the next stage of Biden’s push to invest in America ahead of his reelection bid. White House officials compared the plan to Franklin D. Roosevelt’s effort to bring...
I'm starting to get tired of people talking about Reddit on Lemmy. I personally don't care about Reddit anymore and am not interested in Reddit news....
I’m realising blocking communities/magazines is as much a key to a good experience as subscribing to them, of not more.
100%
While I do consider it important to not isolate one's self too much, we also don't need to subject ourselves to everything, especially when it's having a noticeable negative effect.
I feel like “mansplaining” has lost all meaning. It used to be about men going out of their way to correct someone that didn’t need correcting, particularly if they were wrong themselves, and most often with women. Now people use it on men just…saying things to anyone.
I get that people are touchy on the subject, and I respect anyone’s right to not want or need help. I think how Mr. Solomon handled it was correct - ask if they want your input and respect their answer. It’d just be nice if people didn’t use cultural memes to dismiss others out of hand.
I never said anything about feminism or that they were bad. I’m just making an observation on the situation here. I also don’t think it’s unreasonable for a person to share an interesting personal experience on a forum designed to share exactly that. And he doesn’t sound “slighted” to me. More amused than anything, because it’s an amusing story.
Pretty gross how people are using this to pump up their notoriety, from Beast here to the others saying they "knew" this would happen. Even if it were true, it's not something you start bragging about. People died. Disgusting.
Why YSK: If we want to keep the Fediverse in the hands of its users and prevent "enshittification" (search it), it's good to know how corporations kill grassroots projects like this....
Excluding admins and devs from the start is just petulant and short sighted. Treating them like the enemy will only encourage them to silo off from the community.
I've only gotten through a few, myself. House Flipper 2 seemed like an interesting iteration on the original (from what I played of that). Not necessarily for me, but I think it'll please those that are looking for that. I played quite a bit more Kingdom Eighties than I expected I would. Having just played the first Kingdom for...
I was recently thinking about how amazing it is that with this decentralized community we would have no censorship from big corporations and then I asked myself: what about illegal content? The kind of content that really should not be shared? As an example, what if someone creates a Lemmy instance and starts creating a...
As I see it I would have to first, know who are the admins of every popular instance
Every instance will have a list of admins in the sidebar on the "main page" (the page the pops up when you just type in the instance domain). And you aren't warning every admin. Just the admin of the instance you are looking from and (if you want) the admin of the instance you found the illegal material on.
What would my local police be able to do with a server running on a random country anywhere in the world?
"Law enforcement" would be a better way to phrase it. Your countries higher level law enforcement should have a way to report such things and, one would hope, would have a way to pass that information on to the relevant agency with jurisdiction.
As for a way of reporting a community/instance to the "Fediverse"? Not really. The whole point is that everything is decentralized. It's up to each instance to decide what is unacceptable for them.
That means it is entirely possible that you could munch on 20 to 40 of these ships in one sitting if you are not paying attention, and consume the equivalent of two to four fresh pickles.
Would you really eat that many fresh pickles in one sitting?
So defeating the point of Lemmy? Nah, that's a terrible "solution" that will only serve to empower big servers imposing on smaller or even personal one's.
When those "someone"s are reasonable, sure, it won't be bad, but when they're not? Give the power of federation to a few instances, and that's not just a possibility, but an inevitability.
We already know Meta is planning to add themselves to the Fediverse. Set down this path and the someone deciding who gets access and how will end up being Zuck, or someone like him. That sound like a good future to you?
The jist of it would be that, while gaming exclusives have kinda just done their own thing for a while now, MS has invited the scrutiny of government agencies with such a big acquisition. That's why they are getting the brunt of criticism ATM.
It'll be interesting to see if that scrutiny spreads to the other big devs as well during all this.
