My grandpa is a classical everything-phobic NRA republican, but he has one idea that has elements I kinda like. He thinks the president should be chosen at random from among voting age adults, and that when they’re done with their term they should be paid handsomely by the government and be barred from lobbying jobs for life. I’d be terrified of the kinds of people that could hand executive orders and nuclear launch codes to, but i agree with you and him that retiring politicians shouldn’t be allowed to pivot straight into lobbying and other private sector sources of political influence. I kinda think the ban should be longer than five years, if not for life, but idk there could be some good in lifting it after a time that I’m not thinking of

Nothing about this is true what the heck? Kids aren’t just banned from ever being anywhere, my friends and I hung out in parks and at restaurants and at eachothers’ houses all the time. And anyone who’s been on social media and thinks it’s an appropriate place for kids is very sus or naive. Even the most squeaky clean of sites are cesspools of bullying and grooming and right wing propaganda, and any use beyond looking at memes and catching up with irl friends should be supervised to some extent.
This post acts like we live in a dystopia where kids aren’t aren’t allowed to do anything and need social media to have any friends, which is only the case in really shitty circumstances where a kid is super lonely irl or somehow lives somewhere with no park or library or other good hangout spots. The banning of one specific app (which you can just get around with a vpn) isn’t going to disenfranchise all zoomers overnight, it’ll be a minor inconvenience people get over when they get a vpn or go to a different site. I just wish the people pushing to ban tik tok would apply the same pressure to American companies also pushing propaganda and doing shady stuff with your data

People care about thought crimes, but not thought virtues. People often judge themselves and others unnecessarily harshly for having impure thoughts, but never praise others for wanting to do good things but not doing them/not being able to. Doesn’t seem very fair to me, it sucks how easy it is to latch on to bad thoughts and ideas, even when never acted upon. It’s a thing I’ve struggled with ever since I started being more self aware of my flaws, and this thought makes it a little easier to not give so much weight to my shitty thoughts
