I did a clean install of Windows 11, and have also used Chris Titus’s tools to the best of my ability. Wondering the best extensions to add on Firefox. Also, should I get her onto the Proton train, or try to make her iPhone and Windows play nice?
Besides ublock origin like the other posted stated your biggest scam threats would be coming from social media websites, Facebook or meta whatever its called and email being the biggest. Since I assume you can’t monitor her 24/7 and she’s an active user, setting up some kind of DNS solution and firewall on your network, you managing her passwords and 2fa via hardware, setting up a non admin local account for windows and maybe some kind of easy reference material like pictures with text in a booklet should be used also. Assuming she’s still sound of mind
Edit: as for the phone portion of the question it really depends on how much media do you want her exposed to? You can make a pretty dumb phone via grapheneos and install the games she plays normally (network access restricted of course) with automatic updates. But if she uses social media, messaging apps and other apps like that maybe an iPhone would be easier and simpler for her. At that point you will have to rely on your network solutions, you managing her account credentials, bank included, and the reference material to protect her from scams
Ooo haven’t read the article yet but I’m hoping its a veracrypt alternative, hopefully they also have options to use keyfiles.
Edit: the article mentioned some customization but not at the level of veracrypt still not bad at all. It’ll probably really take off after an audit but looks pretty neat. Also seems to have been around for a few years now, earliest article is around 2017, so I guess its not very popular but curious if anyone has experience using it?
So I’m looking for ThinkPad alternatives, so far I’ve see repairable laptops like the Framework laptop and the Tuxedo linux laptops. What other choices do I have if I want a tough, reliable, and utilitarian computer?
Yeah was hoping this was an option too but couldn’t find it. Especially since you need to open the post, then long press the username to block someone, like with spammers/trolls.
If it still mounts and doesn’t throw any errors probably still keep it as a redundant cold storage just don’t add anything to it anymore. That way if your new backup drive dies because of x reason you still have a chance to recover some data.
Edit: this is assuming its nothing too sensitive where you one want a certain amount of copies in the world and its not under warranty anymore. If it is sensitive, you can try removing the drive from the enclosure, this is called shucking, tape it up with a few layer of whatever tape you have, then either take a drill or a pickaxe to it to destroy the shiny disc of metal inside, aka the platter make sure you do this outside. If its under warranty, securely erase it and get it sent off to be replaced by WD
Been using signal for years and love it and got the majority of my contacts on to it. My question is how are usernames useful now? Honestly didn’t even think about that. I usually use my work phone number for that purpose and if I get close to them then my personal/signal. You’re so right though a very good addition
I just saw that for Spring they’re doing a new Spice and Wolf, but it looks like they’re not continuing the story but re-making what already had a pretty good IMO anime with 2 seasons. IIRC That anime was also pretty close to the source material, so I can’t really see what us watchers will get from a remake other than I...
Think they just want to gain a bigger and newer audience since its been a while after it last aired. Which is odd since a similar situation happened with devil was a part timer and iirc that ended up being a success. I was extremely disappointed too though.
Kinda think its to keep costs down. They already have their builtin totp generators so making a separate application seems kinda redundant. Unless you mean why they don’t make their own hardware security key? That’s probably also to keep costs down (materials, vendors, marketing, upkeep, etc…). I would also like to have a rival with the same credibility for yubikey though in case something happens to the company.
EDIT: We decided not to pursue further diagnosis, because we wouldn’t know what the hell we’re doing anyway, and decided to start the RMA process instead. It might not even be the reason why the PC won’t turn on, but I’m not comfortable with putting that CPU back into his PC again. Once we get a replacement, we’ll see...
Was it new or brought used? Either way probably not the best for it so maybe get your friend to return it (unless they lied and did it themselves, haha)
Maybe consider using a WiFi extender/wireless bridge and set it up properly to ensure a seamless connection to the main network. You really just need to be on the same LAN, at least with VNC, so even running some cat 5 will do the trick. How many feet are we talking, 300-500? There’s also the VPN option but that will require you to get a mobile data plan and either a tablet that supports SIM/ESIM or a hotspot (your existing mobile plan on your phone would work if you are able to create a hotspot and have a significant data limit). Its just a bit more work but should allow you to remotely access VNC over the internet, that or just use anydesk/team viewer
Edit TLDR: You can use a WiFi extender or wireless bridge to establish a long range LAN. There’s also the options of a hotspot from your phone to a tablet, VPN to your desktop from the tablet then use VNC or hotspot from your phone to a tablet then use Anydesk/teamviewer on your computer and tablet. Probably the cheapest way
Yeah didn’t read that reply, my apologies. I do still believe the other method I mentioned, Anydesk/teamviewer + phone hotspot + tablet, is the best budget and convenient method imo. Would cost you around 150$ - 200$ for a tablet maybe less if brought used, which is significantly more “shop-proof” than any device at that price point since its fanless and the ports can be covered with a case. Add in ~15$ a month for a subscription to the remote service since you don’t want to setup LAN, lastly as for the phone hotspot I’m assuming your phone already has that feature. I don’t think installing a client on your phone & computer and setting it up is really labor intensive so you really shouldn’t worry about that. Again I do apologize for not reading the other replies I just wanted to help get you other ideas besides underpowered laptops
Edit just re-read the post: looks like you already settled on a decision so congrats on finding an answer hope you have a good one and yeah probably a new thread since this one might get buried after a few weeks
