GraniteM,

I’m a little confused about how Wonder Woman is right here:

…in the splash panel, but then also in her white secret identity in the next frame?

Also, this:

…was a choice.

GraniteM,

This is a cool page and all, but John’s point falls pretty flat.

“What is the Batman if you’re not afraid of him? Just a man.”

What is a Green Lantern without his ring? Just a man who isn’t a billionaire genius martial arts master. I’ll take Bruce Wayne without an ounce of equipment in a fight against any of Earth’s Green Lanterns without their rings 99 times out of hundred. I’ll take him in just about any test one could devise short of “do you have this one particular psychological quirk where you don’t feel fear,” too. John’s talking nonsense, albeit looking cool while saying it.

GraniteM,

I’ve got a lovely German style beer stein that was “handcrafted in Brazil,” in 1978.

Now why would there be a bunch of nostalgic Germans in Brazil in the '70s? Hmm…

GraniteM,

Government just small enough to fit into your bedroom and your doctor’s office.

If you’re already at the Tao te Ching, then the Tao of Pooh is a very popular exploration of Taoism using Winnie the Pooh as an exemplar of Taoist principles.

In that vein, there are about a zillion “X and Philosophy” books, where X is a pop culture franchise, e.g. “Star Trek and Philosophy,” “Star Wars and Philosophy,” “Watchmen and Philosophy.” All of these are collections of essays by various authors discussing philosophical subjects through the lens of popular culture. I find that it’s very useful to have a set of characters and plots with which you’re already familiar to use as a vocabulary to talk about heavier philosophical subjects.

I don’t know as I would recommend going directly to the primary texts first off. Some of them can be read on their own merits by someone otherwise unfamiliar with the subject, but many are written in archaic or academic language that can be daunting. A class or book club can help in that regard, but just sitting down and trying to read Aristotle all by yourself may not be the easiest of going.

GraniteM,

Once the novelty has worn off:

The Bullpen

It’s the exact same show, except with an angry bull in a pen.

GraniteM,

Hell if I know how expensive a custom flag is to get printed but this or this both look pretty good. Worry less about canonicity and more about if the aesthetics work for you.

GraniteM,

Isaac Asimov, a very intelligent person, wrote a lengthy essay to the effect that he had no idea what intelligence was. He talked about how society would generally consider him more intelligent than the nearly illiterate man who repaired his car, and yet whenever something went wrong with his car he would go to his mechanic and listen to his advice as if it was being handed down from the mountaintop by Moses himself, because Isaac Asimov knew fuck all about car repair. He talked about how he thought that supposedly objective IQ tests were generally a series of gates designed by people already considered intelligent to keep themselves in power, and that they totally disregarded huge swaths of indispensable human knowledge and talent. Isaac Asimov, who has been published in literally every section of the Dewey Decimal System, concluded that he had no firm idea as to what exactly “intelligence” even was.

In short, how could one even define “the dumbest 50%”?

And that’s why Thanos should have made everybody half as large as they once were.

GraniteM,

People experiencing Frenchness can finally receive the help they need!

GraniteM,

I think I saw someone do an intensive breakdown of this scene where they estimated the density of the logs, calculated their velocity by counting the number of frames it took them to collide with the walker, then calculated the crush resistance of the walker’s frame by measuring how much it deformed in response to the amount of energy the logs put into it.

IIRC, the AT-ST walker has a frame approximately as durable as a family minivan. So… not like terrible… assuming you weren’t taking your walker anywhere more dangerous than soccer practice, but not very impressive for military hardware.

GraniteM,

No, it means that they’re like those undersea vent snails that ingest heavy metals. Ewoks are short, but they’re freaky strong because of ultra dense bones and muscles!

GraniteM,

Anyone want to do the math and tell us how tall this guy is?

GraniteM,

Oh yeah, I’m sure there are plenty of body doubles available out there for 6’ 8" dudes with incredibly distinct facial features and skull geometry that would keep a 19th century phrenologist in business for years.

GraniteM,

Also the music video for Fantasy by DyE, for inexplicable Lovecraftian horror.
