@courts @bookstodon When I was young, I read vast quantities of the Golden Age stuff. For must-read, two that come to mind are James Blish's "Cities In Flight" (one of the few I've read multiple times) and George O Smith's "Venus Equilateral."

Grizzlysgrowls,
@Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

@courts @bookstodon And I should suggest Nathan Lowell's "Golden Age of the Solar Clipper" series, starting with "Quarter Share." Very much hard SF, with a hero even I can identify with.

I got to hear Nathan's podcast version when Quarter Share was brand new.

I honestly don't know if Scott Sigler's "Galactic Football League" series would count as hard SF. Definitely SF, though. And I do recommend his podcast version thereof. @ScottSigler

@catdad @bookstodon For me "Covenant" was merely okay to pretty good, but I found the info about leprosy fascinating.

@betaquarii @bookstodon I started reading SF with the actual Golden Age stuff, and it's still good. Nate's "Golden Age," especially the first three, are every bit as good and in some ways better.

@betaquarii @bookstodon @nlowell Michael Anderle's various series are pretty good. Currently reading through the Kurthurian Gambit series of series (if you will). Some of the series (with various co-authors in the TKG universe) are great, some are pretty anemic. But Kindle Unlimited it doesn't cost me more than time to read all of them.

Didn't mean to leave Nate's in there, except he's a major character in the series...

@betaquarii @bookstodon One more possibility is Scott Sigler's "Galactic Football League" series. Good SF, a bit violent, and hey, if they're a US Football fan already...

Oh, and I -strongly- recommend the audio versions of his books including GFL. A lot of fun!

@franciscawrites @bookstodon To be fair, I'd expect Big Foot would know by now how to recognize a trail cam and avoid being spotted by it. Zombies, not so much.

So keep looking, and someday soon Big Foot will chase the zombies in front of your camera. Stands to reason.

Hello people, since this instance is fairly new (I actually created it just a few hours ago) I'm trying to get as many people as possible to follow me so I can follow back and initiate federating to grow my instance's federation and populate my timeline.

I would appreciate everyone boosting my post to help grow my instance's reach. Thanks to everyone in advance!

@Emily Due to vision problems, I thought originally that was social. broccoli.net.

Which someone will now use. 🙂

Currently the "Shadow Vanguard" series by Tom Dublink Michael Anderle and Craig Martelle on my . It's part of that Kutherian collection.

SF, fairly plausible, except the spymaster named Nathan Lowell. Where do these SF folks get these crazy names?

@nlowell

Grizzlysgrowls,
@Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

@nlowell Quite plausible. Or Schenectady. Or Poughkeepsie.

🙂

@nlowell @bookstodon Just finished the second book in "Shadow Vanguard," and I absolutely love this series! The good news is I got the full collection as a bundle on my -- and the bad news is it's the full series and it'll be done. (sigh)

@ChrisMayLA6 @JonSparks @bookstodon From the reader side, I have Kindle Unlimited where I can have 10 "books" borrowed at any given time. I tend to look for the complete sets that each count as one book, so I might have 50 books out at once.

Grizzlysgrowls,
@Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

@dervish @ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon And of course, moving from mechanical and electric typewriters to word processors makes it easier to type a whole lot more content, good or not.

@kristianeleigh @bookstodon As for stories the others would be more interesting -- I wanna see all the tech in the SF and the magic in Fantasy. Horror, fuggedaboudit.

But I think the Romance would just be more enjoyable -- and survivable.

Grizzlysgrowls,
@Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

@kristianeleigh @bookstodon One exception in the SF category. I think I'd do well in the first three books of @nlowell 's "Solar Clipper" series.

Was deeply engaged in a difficult conversation today when a book caught my attention across the room. “Is that Unmasking Autism? I read that earlier this year.” It was an optional opening for optional disclosure. It changed the questions he felt comfortable asking, changed how I provided education, and it ended be a deeply satisfying and helpful exchange. Today was a real win. #autistic #actuallyautistic #autism @bookstodon

On Kindle, it's fine. I was raised by a librarian, an I can never be comfortable writing in a paper book. You spoil it for the next reader, unless it's an archaologist a few centuries from now.

Another fascinating AI paper, this one trying to address the lack of factual reliability from LLMs. These researchers take inspiration from the law by having one LLM "cross-examine" another. Interesting approach. But I wonder how either even can identify factual claims to interrogate.

(And -- somewhat off topic -- I wonder what happens when LLMs end up in extended dialogue; do they start making up their own short-cut language?)

@jeffjarvis I'd picture that scene from "Collosus: The Forbin Project."
