Hey @nextcloud folks. I'm stuck on v27, because the News app (I use extensively) still has no v28 version, despite being a recommended app. And v29 is coming soon. This is very unusual.

How do I resolve this? I don't want to drop News, but I also don't want to get left behind on versions again. (It's a pain to dig out of.)

@Crell @nextcloud

The master branch in GitHub seems compatible with v28, but it does seem to have some bugs. As far as I can see, the project is still being maintained. Depending on your setup, you can do a wget and install it manually, but I think there will be a new version within the next few weeks.

Gosh, there are so many stock photo model ladies being appreciated this #internationalwomensday

HeliaXyana,
@HeliaXyana@mastodon.nl avatar

@renwillis

Indeed.

Companies using stock images to show appreciation for #internationalwomensday seems like a bit of woke washing.

Show me the real women in your company. That is how you show the moments they had to get angry to be heard, the times they had to fight for equal pay, and all the times your company had to learn about and tackle such issues.

Don't just applaud some stock photo ladies for being part of your company. That is not helpful.

7 Disabilities in your story

  • Misha is blind but can still see ghosts.

  • Kritea is deaf but a pianist. She sees and feels the reverberation of sound from her piano.

  • Xavier’s voice hurts him, so he only speaks sign language.

  • Orin and his fellow elite fighters are all blind.

  • Zonasius is missing his lower left leg but has invented an arsenal of prosthetics that inspired him to create a set of wings. Isn’t he glorious?

6 Five Things to become a writer.

  • Room in your cognitive landscape for a theatre. Space in your mind to incorporate a universe.

  • Control of your temporal existence. Time is not money. It is life.

  • a language to record and grow your creations. It's not specific; just use the one that resonates with you.

  • Empathy towards the fictional beings dancing on your stage.

  • The courage and freedom to be unapologetically authentic and face your doubts and fears.

243 karaoke

  • Cedric would somehow sweep the karaoke bar into a full-blown musical frenzy.
  • Pelly would make up different lyrics.
  • Dio would rule at hair metal and air guitar.
  • Zonas would manage to get the karaoke machine to also make toast.
  • Sabre would fail to understand the phenomena.
  • Freya would try to perform a karaoke version of Yoko Ono’s work.
  • Val would be mesmerized by the disco lights.
  • Titus would refuse every duet idea Pelly would come up with.

2 Have you ever based a character on a real person? Do they know?

A bunch, mostly on request.

My younger sister wanted to be the ultimate witch mother, with an army of rugrats at her disposal to cause elaborate mischief.

A friend of mine wanted to attack bureaucracy with a fantasy book tornado.

1 What inspired you to begin writing?

Keeping a dream journal and lucid dreaming. I started writing within my dreams so I figured I’d try to write the story I was dreaming I was writing.

Any one else keep a dream journal?

239 How does your MC feel about babies, children, and teenagers?

To Freya, they’re people. She takes a conversation with a four year old just as serious as she would, talking to a forty year old. In her mind you’re a person from birth. Even when you’re trying to see if you can eat soup without using your hands.

I never set out to make Freya a mother but the world being in the aftermath of a war had it littered with orphans. She met a few she could not let go.

236 allergies

  • Pelly claims to be allergic to metal because she always wants to eat with her own wooden spoon she carved out of a smaller spoon.

  • Zonas is slightly allergic to compound number 17 and a half. A glue he invented that makes him sneeze when he tries to work with it.

  • Dio is actually allergic to boring conversations. It immediately gives him a itchy rash which makes it hard to hide when nice people are being boring.

235 — MC childhood nicknames 2/2

What I like most about her name is that all in Ethereal who identify as female adhere to their mother’s first name as their last name. Officially her entire name is also every mother that came before her, finishing with her birth coven. So, she is “Freya Ophelia Esmee Pilna Actrea of the Seven Star Coven”

Any else put some unconventional naming conventions in their world building?

24 Reader Feedback

Absolutely. Some readers offer insights I had been blind to while writing.
How ever, simple bitching does not equal feedback.

Worst “feedback” came from a man complaining that the MC wasn’t sexy enough in book one. Whole book is about her emerging from a mournful depression and adopting four orphans, with some ghosts and spirits helping out. Sexy was not relevant.

What’s the most nonsensical feedback you’ve ever received?

23 First ever story

I did not always write but I told stories while pretending to read a book to my friends when I was little. Earliest one I can remember was about a witch that had lost her teeth and now tries every tiny white pebble she can find to see if it fits. I did not understand why it freaked my class mates out as much as it did. I never said she was mean. She just cast a spell a bit wrong and her teeth walked out of her mouth while she was sleeping.

22 What is a chapter?

I was told a chapter should not be more than 5000 words so I do some chopping. Yet, now that you mention it, I don’t think that’s how the story arcs in my novels work and perhaps I should not try to chop for the sake of it looking like normal chapters. My story arcs are usually chunks of 20.000 to 30.000 words. Perhaps I should work with parts instead of chapters? Any one use parts only?

Psst, that is actually the optional word for the 21st. Just FYI. It's a good excerpt. Very well written.

I really like the expression "her eyes dull with pain" it's very recognizable as a effect of pain.

229 How comfortable is your MC in their body?

She assumes herself to be in control of it but it is brain transport for her until she meets Cedric and Sabre. Suddenly she experiences physical attraction for the first time and gets insecure. She’s taller and more muscular than the dainty women who are considered attractive by popular standards. But a few moments in which she had to rely on her own strength and speed rekindles a connection with her physical self.

18 Do you suffer for your art? 1/2

Physically it’s not much different from my day job or visual work but at times I wonder about my mental health. I’ve been a dreamer all my life and in the culture I grew up in, that was considered unhealthy. While I largely disagree with that notion, at times I do find my self wondering if embracing that side of my brain is indeed unhealthy. Perhaps it is keeping less compatible with the rest of the world.

antagonist eat healthy?

Not really a antagonist but one cultural eccentricity comes to mind. Within high society it is considered very pure not to need food at all. There is a myth that the more divine you are, the more you can exist on air alone. This is why a lot of popular dishes are incredibly beautiful but have the nutritional value of a sneeze and, the bakery is open at two in the morning so the nobility can drop by in secret and gorge them selves on large pies.

#randomfact All Dutch babies are born bringing little mice to snack on.

In the “beschuit met muisjes” tradition we celebrate a birth by handing out pieces of toast with butter and sugar glanced anise seeds. The tradition dates back to dangerous birthing times when the survival of mother and child was greatly celebrated. It's said that the newborn 'brought' the delicacy nicknamed "muisjes" (little mice) with them.

Perhaps it explains our fondness for cheese.

2024 02-16 : World Building : Cultures and People
How do you create/handle cultures & people?

I start with a general philosophy or motivation of a new character and build their world around them. Asking my self what sort of world would give a person a certain perspective. Once I’ve worked that out a fair bit, I scrap it, do something else entirely and work that out. It’s how I manage my own assumptions.

In light of the delightful discussion:

"To bear or not to bear, that is the question. Shall a woman's worth be determined by the fruit of her womb, or the fruit of her intellect and labor? Insooth, a woman remains resplendent, her humanity untempered, whether she chooses motherhood or treads a solitary path, for her worth is in her being, not her begetting."

224: Do you have a specific playlist or mix for your current WIP?

I have a playlist to which I write, which is usually a bit of shoe-gazing madness and instrumental post-rock, and I have a playlist of how events in my WIP sound. Everything from soundscapes to ritual chants.

Today, I’m incredibly amused by this odd soundscape story of a universe needing fixing from a stern 1960s seamstress.

I just did a word count of my wip and came out at 84k,with the ending nowhere in sight.

Huh. I might have split this one up into two parts...

How high do you think I could go?

HeliaXyana,
@HeliaXyana@mastodon.nl avatar

@anderlandbooks

Had the same problem recently. Three of my books were over 140k so I had to split them. Having done so, I now realize how I was holding back and not adding all that was needed in order to stay within a acceptable size.

But it all depends. Up to 150k would still be fine if that is what the story needs. These splits just seemed to make a lot of sense in my story-arcs.

I would just write on and review after.
