I am an eclectic witchy wordsmith crafting enchantments through fantasy novels. Beyond quills and keyboards, I unleash my creativity on illustrations and visual art and dabble in the mystiques of Linux-y things.

I am Dutch and dyslexic. While I do my best to minimize errors, please forgive me for the occasional slip-up.

229 How comfortable is your MC in their body?

She assumes herself to be in control of it but it is brain transport for her until she meets Cedric and Sabre. Suddenly she experiences physical attraction for the first time and gets insecure. She’s taller and more muscular than the dainty women who are considered attractive by popular standards. But a few moments in which she had to rely on her own strength and speed rekindles a connection with her physical self.

Feb 17 Saturaday excerpt (missed it yesterday). Optional word: dull

@anderlandbooks

Psst, that is actually the optional word for the 21st. Just FYI. It's a good excerpt. Very well written.

I really like the expression "her eyes dull with pain" it's very recognizable as a effect of pain.

antagonist eat healthy?

Not really a antagonist but one cultural eccentricity comes to mind. Within high society it is considered very pure not to need food at all. There is a myth that the more divine you are, the more you can exist on air alone. This is why a lot of popular dishes are incredibly beautiful but have the nutritional value of a sneeze and, the bakery is open at two in the morning so the nobility can drop by in secret and gorge them selves on large pies.

18 Do you suffer for your art? 1/2

Physically it’s not much different from my day job or visual work but at times I wonder about my mental health. I’ve been a dreamer all my life and in the culture I grew up in, that was considered unhealthy. While I largely disagree with that notion, at times I do find my self wondering if embracing that side of my brain is indeed unhealthy. Perhaps it is keeping less compatible with the rest of the world.

All Dutch babies are born bringing little mice to snack on.

In the “beschuit met muisjes” tradition we celebrate a birth by handing out pieces of toast with butter and sugar glanced anise seeds. The tradition dates back to dangerous birthing times when the survival of mother and child was greatly celebrated. It's said that the newborn 'brought' the delicacy nicknamed "muisjes" (little mice) with them.

Perhaps it explains our fondness for cheese.

2024 02-16 : World Building : Cultures and People
How do you create/handle cultures & people?

I start with a general philosophy or motivation of a new character and build their world around them. Asking my self what sort of world would give a person a certain perspective. Once I’ve worked that out a fair bit, I scrap it, do something else entirely and work that out. It’s how I manage my own assumptions.

In light of the delightful discussion:

"To bear or not to bear, that is the question. Shall a woman's worth be determined by the fruit of her womb, or the fruit of her intellect and labor? Insooth, a woman remains resplendent, her humanity untempered, whether she chooses motherhood or treads a solitary path, for her worth is in her being, not her begetting."

224: Do you have a specific playlist or mix for your current WIP?

I have a playlist to which I write, which is usually a bit of shoe-gazing madness and instrumental post-rock, and I have a playlist of how events in my WIP sound. Everything from soundscapes to ritual chants.

Today, I’m incredibly amused by this odd soundscape story of a universe needing fixing from a stern 1960s seamstress.

12 grammar/typography

I blend colloquialism in dialogues with a strict narrative style.

My long sentences includes detailed, immersive descriptions.

I prefer an archaic style but I'm unafraid of breaking grammar rules.

I use active voice for enhanced immersion and vary dialogue setup on context.

I don’t adhere to specific style guides but focus on readability.

I boldly split infinitives and usually write in OpenDyslexic, but export in Merriweather.

@Saposcat

I totally get that. This certainly took some editing. I thought about moving to a different server which would accommodate more characters but I actually like the exercise of having to keep things 500 character max and still get the point across.

I just did a word count of my wip and came out at 84k,with the ending nowhere in sight.

Huh. I might have split this one up into two parts...

How high do you think I could go?

HeliaXyana,
@HeliaXyana@mastodon.nl avatar

@anderlandbooks

Had the same problem recently. Three of my books were over 140k so I had to split them. Having done so, I now realize how I was holding back and not adding all that was needed in order to stay within a acceptable size.

But it all depends. Up to 150k would still be fine if that is what the story needs. These splits just seemed to make a lot of sense in my story-arcs.

I would just write on and review after.

3 Who inspires you as a writer?

Honestly, as a writer, it’s likely all of you.

Might sound a bit sappy, but it is true. You’ve all inspired me to embrace being a writer and shown me it’s not a world I am excluded from.

The stories come from empathy and pondering being alive and, would have been in my creative or visual work in some form regardless but this community has shown me that it’s not such a bat-shit crazy idea for it to emerge in a written form.

6 SC smell memory

Cedric has no idea why but he loves the smell of vanilla. He keeps a piece of vanilla next to a shard of a mirror in his pocket at all times. Unknowingly he has a identical twin and with all identical twins born from witches, the mother cast a scent spell to tell them apart. He smells like cinnamon, his twin brother smells like vanilla. Separated at birth there is still a undefinable memory. He befriends his reflection and loves the scent of vanilla.

5. Can you feel the emotions of your characters as you write them?

Yes.

To stand here in reality, looking through multiple eyes and experiencing the weight of being a myriad of conscious entities in all its diversity. Don't let anyone tell you it is weakness, it takes incredible strength.

There is nothing as profoundly beautiful and powerful as empathy.

3 antagonist wardrobe

There are groups of nasty mages trying to unbalance reality in order to utilize the result as a source of power. Perhaps they’d like my frozen star design. Since they’re trying to take control of both the frost realm and the starlight realm. Or the interstellar space potato. They'd assume it hides some secret to a power that could be obtained because they're not good at getting jokes.

212 Prejudices

Freya initially assumes all men to be blundering idiots in danger of injuring them selves because that is how she perceived her older brothers. They weren’t, they just liked to worry their little sister.

While she is a bit of a witch she was taught at the mages guild. Like many mages she assumes that witches are just not academically inclined until she meets Mona. Mona’s super power is knowledge and she is very witch.

2 If your MC stayed in your place for a few weeks, what would their favorite room be and why?

That's fun! Never imagined my characters here before.

The kitchen. Not because she likes cooking but I can imagine a microwave being a endlessly fascinating object to play with when you’re a alchemist. Between that and the odd assortment of plants in my back garden, I suspect she’d quickly discover what a smoke alarm is.

Today, I will finally upload "Sky Falls", Pillars of the Empire Book 2, which is #6 in the Winds and Pillars series.

I love the cover to bits, so I'll give you a little preview after playing in GIMP with it.

Thing is, I really adore these little pics with the arrows and tropes, so I made one for Sky. I doubt any of that will surprise you.

I'll let you know when it's up in the stores, as usual, this can take a while.

Please help.

I am looking for the most privacy friendly way to buy ebooks.

Every shop and platform I've looked at would index and sell my purchase and a lot of other information.

I can get my ebooks in different ways but I explicitly want to pay the author for their work without me and my behavior ending up a resell product for which ever platform I use to complete this purchase.

Any ideas?

HeliaXyana,
@HeliaXyana@mastodon.nl avatar

@Firlefanz

Ah I had not considered that yet.

Would love a way to directly purchase from authors on a privacy friendly platform.

Seems to me to be the only way to liberate the reading world from big tech.

It's not too hard to imagine some sort of with purchasing options?

There must be something out there...

Really prefer to pay with money instead of my privacy.

Again, if any one has any ideas?

HeliaXyana,

Neat! I didn't know Leanpub.

Problem with such things is that it's all splintered all over the interwebs. Would be good to have fediverse connected bookstores or something like that.
