I_Miss_Daniel,

Hello fellow Ryobi mower owner. Or as I call it, my $500 gym membership.

I have a big old ride on mower as well but hate all the noise and the smell of exhaust, so rather just take three times as long pushing the Ryobi about.

Nothing quite like the satisfying thwack when it eats a small blackberry bush or snaps a runaway wysteria tendril.

I_Miss_Daniel,

I’m guessing its mortal enemy is the beach towel.

I_Miss_Daniel,

It used to be in Cyprus that you paid less tax on an unfinished building. Lots of them had rebar sticking out.

I_Miss_Daniel,

I think I prefer that my dog dies before I do. Being a King Charles spaniel it’ll probably just sit by my rotting corpse until it dies from hunger.

I_Miss_Daniel,

Hehe. I won’t even get on a plane. If she can’t go with me, I’m not going.

Apple users are being locked out of their Apple IDs with no explanation (9to5mac.com)

There appears to be an increasingly widespread Apple ID outage of some sort impacting users tonight. A number of people on social media say that they were logged out of their Apple ID across multiple devices on Friday evening and forced to reset their password before logging back in…

I_Miss_Daniel,

I wonder if it’s related to the AI naughty bits ban. Certainly sounds like a cock up…

I_Miss_Daniel,

Bugger. Was hoping it was a sync upgrade for cloud storage providers.

I_Miss_Daniel,

Thanks for caring @warmaster.

I don’t mind the downvotes - it’s part of life and I did kinda go off on a tangent which some people wouldn’t have appreciated.

Still, the lack of a proper Google Drive (in my case) sync feature that has offline support is an impediment to migrating away from Windows. I’m a little puzzled as to why Google doesn’t support it, yet they do a Mac version which is sort-of Linux. Maybe because there’s so many Linux implementations?

I_Miss_Daniel,

Thanks for that.

Yes I did some research. Certainly you can access Google Drive in Gnome quite easily. It works pretty well if you’re online and on a decent connection.

There are third party paid tools available to do the background syncing etc if needed.

Thanks for the clarification re Chrome OS. I never really thought of it as an actual usable OS alternative to Linux as it seems too locked down to be useful.

My roof top system has done a bit.

I’ve been able to store a bit to use at night into several old AGM batteries.

Just moved from Starlink to 5G so that’s another kW per day I’m saving.

  • I_Miss_Daniel,

I don’t know who Daniel is but I miss him :)

    Elton John song.

    I_Miss_Daniel,

I’m on Express VPN only because they apparently specialise in avoiding geoblocks and VPN detection for overseas TV sites etc. (Plus three months free for being a TWiT.) So far it’s true for BBC iPlayer, RTe Player and UK Channel 4. For this purpose I’m not overly worried about how log-resistant they are, but interesting to keep up with the score here. The integrated ‘ad blocking’ is also useful, but slower than AdGuard as it seems pages have to wait for assets to fail to load before displaying rather than just being 404’d.

    I_Miss_Daniel,

Possibly, or they have multiple entry points on residential ISP blocks and don’t have too many people NAT’d per IP so it looks legit. That would explain the higher costs.

    I_Miss_Daniel,

What does the r mean on r4r?

    I_Miss_Daniel,

    Aah ok.

Does that mean /dirtyr4l would be an alternative orientation?

    I_Miss_Daniel,

That’s more likely to be another battery optimisation setting, or a low memory condition.

Each manufacturer is different in this regard, google ‘don’t kill my app’ for more info.

Windows 11 Start menu ads are now rolling out to everyone (www.theverge.com)

Microsoft is starting to enable ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11 for all users. After testing these briefly with Windows Insiders earlier this month, Microsoft has started to distribute update KB5036980 to Windows 11 users this week, which includes “recommendations” for apps from the Microsoft Store in the Start menu....

    I_Miss_Daniel,

Except for the task manager. Windows 8 to Windows 10 had a good one.

    I_Miss_Daniel,

Swype is not listed in this document.

I didn’t read far enough to see if it only affected pinyin (Chinese) cloud features or all languages.

    I_Miss_Daniel,

Maybe also check out Total Launcher.

Agreed re how customisable it is. Can also back up to a file for easy transfer to your next phone etc.

    I_Miss_Daniel,

Can’t seem to find this on f-droid or DDG.

    I_Miss_Daniel,

Thank you for this. I appreciate your effort.
