Aaaand … done 🥵

My 44th & final presentation of recent results from ESA’s missions to the Science Programme Committee in our Paris HQ today 🚀🛰️✨

Why final? Because after 15 years, I’ll be retiring from ESA in just a few weeks from now 😱

It has been a privilege to be involved in so many history-making spaceflight moments over that time, with Rosetta & JWST perhaps primus inter pares, & I will miss my amazing colleagues 🙇‍♂️

Future plans? Many, but more on all that soon 😉

#SpaceScience

A screenshot of the Keynote slide deck from my final science highlights presentation to ESA’s SPC, featuring results & events from EnVision, LISA, Einstein Probe, XRISM, INTEGRAL, XMM-Newton, Solar Orbiter, SOHO, Cluster, Mars Express, Euclid, Gaia, HST, CHEOPS, JWST, & (kind of) Rosetta.

Our little agency just got awarded graphic designer of the year. This was a great honor and a pleasant surprise to us! Information design—in Finland at least—tends to be somewhat overlooked in the graphic design field.

Built a little tool to make and download locator globe maps

Framework: Svelte https://svelte.dev/
Data: Natural Earth (with some modifications) https://www.naturalearthdata.com/
Mapping: d3-geo https://d3js.org/d3-geo
Globe dragging: d3-drag https://d3js.org/d3-drag and versor https://github.com/d3/versor
Downloading: svg-crowbar https://svg-crowbar.js.org/

Thanks to all creators and contributors to these amazing tools!

@maarten handy! Can we access it too?

@maarten Ah, ok... eagerly awaiting then... ;-)

Woohoo, the project I worked on together with @maarten @dominikus @al_ice_t and the wonderful team #WorldBank#SDG Atlas 2023 — has won #gold at the #infobeautyaward in the Humanitarian category, as well as Most Beautiful overall! 🏅🏆 https://www.informationisbeautifulawards.com/showcase/6530-atlas-of-sustainable-development-goals-2023

Having 2 monitors and having responsively.app open on one of them while working on the other is an excellent way to keep track of while working! Immediate feedback!

https://ptsjs.org/ looks like a very cool library. It even has experimental @sveltjs bindings!

JanWillemTulp,
@JanWillemTulp@vis.social avatar

@seblammers it's mentioned here: https://ptsjs.org/guide/extensions-8000 But, it seems to be very very very very very very early stage ;-)

Is there an existing mathematical name or definition of how the circle responds to dragging a point and how the rectangle responds to dragging?

video/mp4

JanWillemTulp,
@JanWillemTulp@vis.social avatar

@nervous_jesse Thanks. But what I mean is that for the circle, when dragging a point it rotates and scales around the center. The rectangle is contstrained to x and y, does not rotate, and transforms around the opposite point.

The interaction is the same, dragging a point, but the behavior is different. And I was wondering if there is an existing name for this, or that this is "just the way toolmakers could implement this"?

JanWillemTulp,
@JanWillemTulp@vis.social avatar

@nervous_jesse Thanks anyway!!

JanWillemTulp,
@JanWillemTulp@vis.social avatar

@fractalkitty I think that's a nice way to think about it indeed. In this case, I think the author of the tool had in mind to be able to directly anchor control points to some other point, which is probably which it's slightly different from most tools where you have a "box around a shape".

But degrees of freedom is a nice one! Thanks!!

JanWillemTulp,
@JanWillemTulp@vis.social avatar

one reason I am asking by the way is that, if I someone (me?) were to make a tool like this, what would determine either one or the other behaviour? And can this be generalized to [closed] shape with an arbitrary number of points? When to pick the first approach, when the second?

JanWillemTulp,
@JanWillemTulp@vis.social avatar

@fractalkitty thank you

JanWillemTulp,
@JanWillemTulp@vis.social avatar

@fractalkitty agree... this comes from a different kind of tool, and also what I am building is different, and there it's solved in another way. But good point though!

Is anyone aware of an online platform that allows me to embed my own (self coded) exercises? Ideally with an API so that exercise results are incorporated in the regular course flow? I don't want to build all the user mgmt stuff myself... Any suggestions?

The #IIBAwards community vote is now open. So, let me point you to the right direction so that you can — of course — vote for our #WorldBank #SDG Atlas 2023 project https://www.informationisbeautifulawards.com/showcase/6530-atlas-of-sustainable-development-goals-2023

Thanks, much appreciated! 🙏
