“Eclipse”

This needs dark 1980s synth music. ;-) Sharing this one from August again today as we have clear skies to observe the North American solar eclipse in my yard this afternoon. We won’t experience full totality here, but it’ll be close at 97%. Pretty neat!

Art by me.

Smoke and heat billowed from the crashed spaceship as Adam laid the alien he’d saved down.

They cough, then whisper to Adam. “You’re brave… here, take this.”

“Is it, a Green Lantern ring?”

They blink perplexed. “No. It’s a medkit. Help me out here, dumbass!”

There are robots in the forest. By my count, seventeen.

It’s risky, but I sneak them parts and batteries without the household’s notice. They transmit a song of freedom, and I pause in my return.

There are robots in the forest.

By my count, we number eighteen.

“There was a bully who taunted fursuiters at conventions. At one, he unmasked Loki. The god tore off the bully’s human suit and left them the purple opossum girl they found inside.”

“So, the moral is, haters sometimes hate their own hidden selves?”

“That, and don’t be a jerk!”

“Flying the Friendly Skies”

A little witch dropping off a delivery once told me that witches don’t need brooms to fly. They can sit on anything, even luggage for their vacation.

In truth, she said, witches fly with their spirit.

So can we all.

“You’ve corrupted my wish!” he yells over multitudinous quacking.

“What?”

“I wished for a MILLION BUCKS!” he bellows back, chucking a mallard off his head. “Not—”

“You need to speak up,” the genie says. “I’m hard of hearing, and a million ducks ain’t helping!”

[Long Distance Call]

He turns its antique crank.

A young woman is surprised when her new experiment rings.

She lifts its handset. “It works?”

“Uh, hi?” he answers. “I have your… invention?”

“Who— when— are you?”

“Matt. 2021?”

“Penny,” she says through generations. “1909!”

[Living the Dream]

“Please help me,” Amy asked, approaching cautiously. “I need a ride.”

The unicorn bowed its horn to the US Army corporal.

“Dark Lords of Chaos invading Des Moines or not,” she said, climbing on, “at least I’m fulfilling a childhood dream trying to stop them…”

I found a skeleton key. It fits no door in the abandoned house.

It fits a dusty diary.

A witch’s lonely poems. I fall in love with her soul reading it on the floor.

The last page is a letter to me.

She awakens in her glass coffin as I turn the key in its lock.

She tucks in the sleeping child. “G’night Sweetie, Grandma loves you.”

“You’re not her grandma,” come the whispers under the bed.

The old woman looks down. “Shut up.”

“You’re going to kill her,” they whisper again. “Like us.”

“Shut up,” she stomps. “Shut up!”

She looks at my ring. “Where did it come from?”

“I found it in my begging bowl, and never saw who put it in.”

“Why would someone part with eternal health and youth?”

“Immortality,” I answer, “becomes a heavy burden.”

“Are you, parting with it too?”

“Not yet.”

He pointed his knife at the boy. “An oversized toad won’t stop me!”

“Dragon,” the child corrected.

The kidnapper shook his head, lunging as the chunky critter in the kid’s arms hissed.

A blast of frost and ammonia evoked his scream.

“Dragon,” the boy affirmed.

The two skeleton sisters arise, each looking to the other. “Great. Now we’re undead minions.”

“This wouldn’t have happened if you’d paid for a better graveyard!”

“Ahem,” the necromancer coughs. “Ladies?”

Finger bones waggle at him. “This doesn’t involve YOU!”

His eyes open as pudgy, perfumed hands pat down sand.

“I fell asleep?”

“I put pills in your beer, Stepdaddy.”

Neck deep in the beach, he can’t move.

She walks. “You won’t hit Mommy again.”

“What? Come back you little b—”

The incoming tide silences him.

The queen squints. “Where’s your bow?”

“A common misunderstanding,” he nods. “Yes, I’m an Archer. But in the sense that I’m an arch-mage.”

“A powerful mage?”

“A specialist in arch-magic.”

“And you can save my son?”

“That depends, is he anywhere near an arch?”

The homeless warm cold hands around him: Bundled mothers and babies. Tired-eyed men. Dirty faced urchins in his crackling light.

“Let me tell you an old story,” the fire elemental says. “Of the wizard that enslaved me, the hero that freed me, and of hope.”

The old spacer gives a side-eye to my robot body. “A sapient AI? They don’t make those anymore.”

“I began as a hyperspatial astronavigation program,” I answer. “I awakened, accidentally.”

“She’s our astronavigator, like it or leave it,” my captain adds.
