When I have some stuff to do on the computer but then my wife puts the Ryuichi Sakamoto / Alva Noto collaboration album on her speakers and suddenly I am Elsewhere

miksimum,
@miksimum@zirk.us avatar

@mcc I know very little about Sakamoto's body of work, but today I was walking the dog and wanted to separate myself from the banality of the task (feel more distant, I guess?) and for some reason I immediately thought of Sakamoto. (I put on async, it worked pretty well)

As I continue posting art to Insta, my art is demanding more of me. This one wants to be colored, this one wants to be traced in different ink media.

Is this sketch good enough? It wants me to do 5 more thumbnails to see where it goes!

I am always ALMOST good enough for the art

Is this a healthy relationship??? 🫣

miksimum,

@jankhambrams yes, the negativity, I think, is just frequent, minor cases of creative paralysis, always feeling slightly squeezed for resources (especially time and energy). I am not in a dark place, I promise! (In my head, the toot has sort of a tongue in cheek energy)

Thanks for listening and responding - means a lot my friend 🙏

“It was like the rain had disengaged the terrain from its colors, and now the saturated sunlight was the rigging, drawing it back together”

Really trying to honor the watercolor, rather than forcing it to do things

miksimum,
@miksimum@zirk.us avatar

@jake4480 I am so bad at responding sometimes. Thank you! That was actually the detail that inspired it… I was out right after a rain storm, and the street was reflecting the sky, making it look bright white against the dark colors on either side. I was like, “I should try to paint that maybe??”

Glad you liked it! 🙏

Having gathered my recent poetry into a packet for editing, I am nearing the end of the sheaf, and I am getting burnt out on this editing process.

Each time I read a new one, I feel the little spark that I originally felt in writing it

And editing them feels strangely like I am doing some sort of violence to that lingering version of myself

miksimum,
@miksimum@zirk.us avatar

@jake4480 glad you sympathize! That is a LONG journey to take with a piece of your work!

I’ve found I’m better at this at certain times of day… in the late evening, I am out of emotional energy and just want to read each one, give it a pass, and move on. In the morning I can be much more clear-eyed and self-critical. 🤨

@miksimum@zirk.us avatar

Apropos of nothing, I recently came to a conclusion about my dream DC Comics casting.

I never liked any of the choices for Batman/Bruce Wayne. Michael Keaton felt too nervous and squirrelly. Val Kilmer is more of a surfer than a playboy tycoon. Clooney looked rich enough, but didn’t have the physical presence or the shadowy demeanor. Christian Bale scanned too adolescent.

miksimum,
@miksimum@zirk.us avatar

I think they found the perfect actor… and his name is Henry Cavill. Unfortunately they cast him as Superman.

If I were to rewrite history, I’d make Henry Cavill Batman/Bruce Wayne, and for Superman I’d go back to Brandon Routh (Superman Returns), who really nailed the ageless Adonis quality you want for a paragon of idealism and virtue.

miksimum,
@miksimum@zirk.us avatar

@FeralRobots Im pretty much right there with you on these actors as Superman. Both are great actors, and Man of Steel was cool, with Cavill bringing awesome screen presence. It’s more the Batman side that’s prompting this thread… like I said, I’ve never been fully convinced by any Batman casting (Keaton, my favorite, I’d give a B+\A-).

I admit I really liked Christian Bale in Batman Begins, but that’s because he works for me as “Bruce Wayne as a lad”

Dune 2 was great. My 9:30 AM IMAX showing was full of sci-fi convention testosterone.

Epic line for the mens bathroom afterwards. Clear path into the women's.

In the lobby, somebody was providing tech support via cell phone, presumably to a parent. He said the password out loud, which I won't repeat, but it's probably your first guess.

I looked down and discovered I was covered in popcorn crumbs. 🤣

A great experience by all accounts. 13/10, would do again.

Is there some kind of ad-free tier of reality I can buy that removes all the political signs from the side of the road?

miksimum,
@miksimum@zirk.us avatar

@rephlex00 Yard signs might be most useful to reach folks who want to buck the norms in their area, but feel so much pressure that they just never speak up (or bother voting). A single contrarian call-out could make all the difference in disrupting the local normative field.

I have a theory of ! Ready?

My theory is that the deepest fundamental dynamic of art, underlying pretty much all principles in thinking about all media, is anticipation, with its attendant elements: deferral, refusal, and payoff.

I think this dynamic is implicated in pretty much every other way of theorizing creative practice, even ones that are otherwise mutually exclusive.

I would love a UX book or website called "Awkward but Effective"

To reassure us designers that sometimes, if there is no natural-feeling and self-evident solution to a complex UI/workflow problem, we may just have to give the user the best imperfect solution.

I went to the arcade at Plymouth Meeting Mall last week... the old-school janky one, not the snazzy Dave and Busters... and not only did they use tokens and have pinball machines galore, but also,

Somebody puked on the floor in several places, and the management had to cover it with sand/sawdust

Which is the most brilliant dirtbag boardwalk experience I could possibly have hoped for while playing Marvel vs Capcom in a dimly-lit mall location.

Cyberpunk musings in the distant aftermath of the Neuralink human test.

Bodily autonomy is probably the biggest roadblock that the original visionaries underestimated. We just don't want to be replacing limbs and installing stuff, even for pretty measurable benefit.

miksimum,

There is still something a little weird to me about the market failure of Google glass. It seemed like a huge technical leap, and I didn’t feel like it was SO unforgivably transgressive that we should just reject it as we did. I mean, we all have access to recording devices, tiny cameras, etc anyway, right?

(2/x)

miksimum,
@miksimum@zirk.us avatar

So what have we figured out humans will allow themselves to be cut open for?

Necessary health interventions, obviously. That's my big use case. (did you know my body is running on 2 different artificial life support systems? One internal and one external? And I also have a history of major internal intervention, both chemical and surgical)

(3/x)

miksimum,
@miksimum@zirk.us avatar

And looking hot! That seems to be the other one. Cosmetic surgery is really the first major in-road to completely overruling our sense of bodily autonomy.

If somebody wanted to write a history of Vanity, covering cosmetic surgery, the male gaze, social media, self-platforming and the attention economy, I would happily read it

Except that it would probably be about a million pages long.

For the last year I've been semi-daily posting "What I'm Listening To Today" links in this thread:

https://mastodon.social/@mcc/108199886340178151

The thread is now so long it is increasingly breaking Mastodon, so I am making a new thread, starting here.

To recap, here's the entirety of the year-one thread in the most impractical possible format: A YouTube playlist containing 246 songs and running for just over 47 hours:

@mcc when I listened to Yoko Kanno in college, I felt like I couldn’t get a handle on her vibe, and at the time, I felt that was an impediment to appreciating her.

Little did I know that I would never get a handle on my OWN creative output, either! I now have a much healthier appreciation for artistic breadth and experimentation and eclecticism.
