A key aspect of the currently debated paper on "AI" models' water usage is in the last paragraphs:

Data centers were pushed to "follow the sun" in order to reduce carbon emissions by harnessing (cheap) solar energy. Cool!

But locations with a lot of sun often get very hot during the warmer months requiring a lot of water to cool them.

So by trying to emit less carbon (and because solar power is very cheap of course, it's not to be nice) companies are contributing to the aridification of the regions they moved to.

"AI" (and to a lesser degree all digital infrastructure) has massive impact on the environment. It's not an ethereal thing that we can decouple from our other activities.

    The received cultural mythology of 9/11 is so far from my actual lived experience of being an adult New Yorker on that day that it breaks my brain (and my heart) to even try to reconcile the two. For those who are younger, question nearly all of the political framing you hear about that day. All these years later, it’s clear Bin Laden got nearly all he wanted, thanks to the predictability of American reactionaries.

    Mittelmotor verschleißt stark die Kette und Ritzel, daher würde ich den nur in Kombination mit einem Zahnriemen nehmen. Sehr wartungsarm, kein Öl. Geht nur mit Nabenschaltung, diese sehr wartungsarm. Wegen E-Antrieb braucht man hier auch nicht viele Gänge oder tollen Wirkungsgrad, Shimano 7- oder 8-Gang reicht völlig.
    Bei Nässe und Tram-Schienen muss man immer aufpassen, also dicke City-Reifen reichen.

    @isotopp Die größte Auswirkung einer großen Batterie betrifft natürlich den Preis. Der Verbrauch ist dagegen kaum betroffen, da du beim normalen Bremsen ja mit einem Wirkungsgrad von etwa 90% rekuperierst (und auch der Rollwiderstand durch das Gewicht kaum beeinflusst wird).

    @vowe Das ist eine Diskussion auf hohem Niveau... Ohne Verschuldung bei unseren Nachfahren sollten auch ein E-Auto nur die wenigsten brauchen müssen. Es geht also eher um Ausbau des !

    @isotopp Da sich bei / seit Jahren in dieser Hinsicht nichts verändert, ist es für mich offensichtlich, dass das zum Konzept gehört. "Willst du billlich kriegst du billich." Wir sind wegen des Preises und der guten technischen Leistung seit einiger Zeit bei O2 (monatlich kündbar), im Wissen, dass ich im Störungsfall auf mich gestellt bin...

    @alper @mrtoto @xchange @isotopp @ixs @flo @mcfly I don't have a car so I don't care at all if anyone is tracking cars, but in general, I am very happy to have at least some Datenschutz in Germany to prevent people tracking and scanning whatever they like (I know there is still abuse, but at least it's illegal). And if someone uses Datenschutz as an excuse to block a law, well then they'll find any excuse if there wasn't Datenschutz.

    Although forbidden in system settings, the App on my iPhone has full access to photo gallery...

    Would be glad if anyone could validate the behavior on their phone.

    @Bummler It's true, after re-install, the photo lib permission is no longer there, but still, left to the photo trigger, there's the gallery button with full access:

    TW Mysogynie und Mobbing in der eigenen Partei.

    Ich habe extrem lang geschwiegen. Kein schlechtes Bild nach außen, nichts negatives, alles ausblenden, nichts zulassen. Ihnen keinen Raum und keine Aufmerksamkeit für ihr Mobbing geben. Doch ich kann nicht mehr, und es wird Zeit, das öffentlich zu machen und sich zu wehren. Trotzdem muss ich betonen, dass es extrem viele Menschen in der Partei quer in Bundesgebiet gibt, die mich unterstützen, insbesondere mein eigener Landesverband in Sachsen und Kreisverband in Dresden, die mir extrem den Rücken stärken.

    Der Post hier ist nur die Spitze eines Eisberges. Gepostet vom Landesvorsitzenden (!) Brandenburg, geliked von den Vorsitzenden (!) von Hessen und Baden-Württemberg. Inzwischen gelöscht. (1/x)

    @stillnotlovin Was soll ich zu so einem Post sagen als Mann, außer dass es mich sehr beschämt. Was Mann dort als "Humor" tarnt, empfinde ich als extrem herabwürdigend. Ich wünsche dir, Anne, viel Kraft, damit umzugehen und deine Position zu halten und Rechenschaft einzufordern. Andrerseits frage ich mich, wie solch ein Mensch überhaupt in eurer Partei an seinen Posten gekommen ist. Lasst uns überall daran arbeiten, dass solche Menschen keine Relevanz mehr bekommen!
