Fencepost errors, assemble!

The mastodon web interface says that this post of mine (https://mathstodon.xyz/@christianp/111761193473498177) was 3 days ago. That caught my eye because I clicked on it to write a reply with an update on day 5 of my illness. I could attribute a difference of one day to a fencepost error, but TWO?

Spot the errors:

  • I wrote the first post on Monday.
  • It's now Friday.
  • Which is four days later.
  • I wrote the first post at 17:41.
  • It's now 10:30.
  • So it hasn't been 4×24 hours since that post. It's only been 3 whole days.
  • Monday was day 1 of my illness.

@christianp fence post vs fence panel counting is my nemesis!!

About 6 months ago, my library e-book system switched from Overdrive to Libby (owned by same company).
Libby will tell me there are 5 pages left in a chapter: I'm looking at a double page, then next double page has text only on left side, blank on right, then next double page starts the next chapter.
I feel like it's 2 pages to next chapter (since looking at a double page is like "one page" to my mind, but that aside, I have 3 single pages of text, then the next chapter. Libby has counted 5: the 3 singles, the blank, and the first page of next chapter.

This was a surprise ... I'm on a tight time-scale this morning so thought I'd have a quick look before putting it to one side to do later today.

Then I accidentally did it in one shot.

Today's question: Let p be any prime greater than 3. How often will either of the integers p+1 or p-1 be divisible by 6?
means I'm going to share my thinking here...

KarenCampe,
@KarenCampe@mathstodon.xyz avatar

What do I know? p is a prime number greater than 3.
So 5, 7, 11, 13, etc.
All those primes are odd numbers.
So p-1 and p+1 will be even numbers.

KarenCampe,
@KarenCampe@mathstodon.xyz avatar

To be divisible by 6 means the number is divisible by both 2 and 3.
Since p-1 and p+1 are even, they are divisible by 2.
{Halfway there...}

KarenCampe,
@KarenCampe@mathstodon.xyz avatar

To be divisible by 3, a number's digits must sum to a multiple of 3, like 615: 6+1+5 = 12.
But I don't know the digits of p-1 or p+1.

Look at some primes & adjacent integers:
13 has 12 & 14 so 12 is div by 3.
17 has 16 & 18; 18 div by 3
...
37 has 36 & 38 ✅
41 has 40 & 42 ✅

KarenCampe,
@KarenCampe@mathstodon.xyz avatar

Examples look good, but let's think about general case.

p-1, p, p+1 are consecutive integers.

Out of every 3 consec ints, 1 must be divisible by 3 bc multiples of 3 occur every 3rd integer.

p not div by 3 bc it's prime

So, either p-1 or p+1 MUST be div by 3.

KarenCampe,
@KarenCampe@mathstodon.xyz avatar

Thus, for EVERY prime p > 3, either p-1 or p+1 must be divisible by 6.
How often? ALL THE TIME.

That was fun! Please share how you thought about it.
And check out the January Calendar of problems for more

@ColinTheMathmo ok I've tried this for the first time! It seemed like a word search (which I am good at but don't usually find interesting) but I like the challenge here: there's ONE way to use all the letters! Had to use hints to understand exactly how it works, but now I get it.
Thanks for suggesting it. {and no thanks for another way to be distracted playing games on my phone...😉}

Asking on behalf of a friend ...

Is there anyone reading this who could give a talk on "Math(s) and Artificial Intelligence"?

It would need to be aimed at a general audience, so while the material itself doesn't need to be deep, the person giving the talk would need to have some first-hand experience of the actual math(s) that's involved.

Anyone?

If you're comfortable doing so, please boost for reach ... Mastodon-the-platform relies on networking effects.

Many thanks.

@ColinTheMathmo I have no idea who might be good for this, but I liked this article from last summer (so I included it in the Carnival of Math 219 post I hosted)
It explains some of the math behind LLMs... not sure if you want the topic to be LLMs/AI in maths...

I'd argue that the web version of Outlook fails WCAG 2.1.4: Character Key Shortcuts (Level A) in spirit, if not by the letter.

There are single-key shortcuts that do annoying things like archiving the currently-focused email. You can turn them off, but only by turning off all keyboard shortcuts, including combos like Ctrl+Enter to send the email you're writing.

I only know about these shortcuts because every now and then Outlook decides the subject line doesn't have focus any more and the word I'm typing instead causes havoc in my inbox.
