One of my biggest problems is that I hoard interesting problems. I think of them as things to personally solve rather than share with my team 🙃. I take on the characteristics of Smaug, which is clearly not a good thing.

Second phone call of the day: "Help, the server is no longer reachable, and the internet connection is down! We're completely stuck!"
Knowing the location and type of their server room, I asked, "Have you sent someone to check?" They replied, "Not yet, but we're sending a colleague right away." Five minutes later, their colleague called, embarrassed: "Sorry, the cleaning staff were in the room, and to clean better, they UNPLUGGED THE SERVERS FROM THE OUTLETS (the UPS units are in another room), to lift the cables and clean better."

Problem solved 😆

Today's question: Let p be any prime greater than 3. How often will either of the integers p+1 or p-1 be divisible by 6?
means I'm going to share my thinking here...

KarenCampe,
@KarenCampe@mathstodon.xyz avatar

Thus, for EVERY prime p > 3, either p-1 or p+1 must be divisible by 6.
How often? ALL THE TIME.

That was fun! Please share how you thought about it.
And check out the January Calendar of problems for more

When's the right time to solve small problems? The right answer: "As soon as practically possible!" But our love of heroes gets in the way.

The most powerful thing that you can do when an shows up with a problem is ask "what would you do?" As soon as you ask, you'll get a look inside of their mind to see whether or not they have what it takes to at scale.

When you’re trying to clean up a big, overwhelming mess (literal or metaphorical), and you can’t figure out where to start, the solution is simple:

Less figuring out. More starting.

AI Prompt Engineering Isn’t the Future: https://hbr.org/2023/06/ai-prompt-engineering-isnt-the-future
If the future of AI is actually problem formulation, I think a lot of UX researchers will thrive. It’s, basically, our job, and we were trained to do: problem diagnosis, problem decomposition, problem reframing, problem constraint design. I really like the new perspective in here.

Dear People,

Your buying The Wrong Thing to solve your problem, is not really my problem.

I can advise you on how to solve Your Problem (that you created) but you have to make the decision on which option to pick to solve or mitigate Your Problem.

All clear now? 🙂🤷‍♂️
